Super-filly Samantha Miss for sale
AUSTRALIA'S most exciting young racehorse Samantha Miss is up for sale, with owner Ron Croghan offering a half share in the filly for a staggering $10 million.
Croghan, 80, dropped the bombshell last night after placing an add for his powerhouse filly in racing newspaper The Sportsman.
"Samantha Miss is definitely up for sale," Croghan said. "She was brilliant during the spring and I think she is only going to get better as she matures and gets older.
"I have been talking to a few people about it (selling a share) and I just want to test the water and see what is out there."
Croghan purchased the well-bred Redoute's Choice filly for $1.5 million as a yearling.
Samantha Miss has won seven of her 11 career starts including the Victorian Oaks at Flemington last Thursday - piling up more than $1.7 million in prizemoney.
If sold, the triple Group One winner will become the highest priced female racehorse purchased in Australia.
Several bloodstock agents have valued Samantha Miss at roughly $6 million and believe the $10 million price tag for a half share is out of reach. "Personally I think she is worth between $5 million and $6 million," one leading agent said. "Historically, broodmares do not fetch that sort of money ($10 million) and the financial climate suggests it is not about to change."
The current record is held by Milanova, who fetched $5 million at an Inglis broodmare sale earlier this year.
Trainer Kris Lees is aware his star filly could have new owners in the near future but insists Samantha Miss will be staying in his stable.
"She ain't going anywhere," he said.
