Sunday, 3 December 2006: Japan Cup winner Horlicks has delivered her 13th and final foal at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.
After the One Cool Cat colt foal was born her Hastings owner and breeder Graham de Gruchy immediately confirmed the retirement of Horlicks from stud duties.
"She is 24 years old now and it's time to retire her," de Gruchy said.
"She's been a wonderful mare to me on the racetrack and at stud.
"She still looks magnificent and nowadays she is pure white.
"I am breeding from three of her daughters so the dynasty will continue for many years to come," he said.
Horlicks (Three Legs x Malt by Moss Trooper) won the 1989 Japan Cup to become the first Australasian horse to win the then richest horse race in the world.
Trained by Dave and Paul O'Sullivan at Matamata in New Zealand, Horlicks won 17 races during her illustrious racing career.
Her other Group 1 victories were recorded in the DB Draught Classic at Ellerslie twice, the New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie and Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington in Melbourne.
As a broodmare Horlicks has left the 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew and Group 2 Avondale Guineas winner Bubble.
