玫瑰崗堅尼賽後新聞 : Peter Robl 首奪 Group one

Dealer Principal , Littorio and Largo Lad

Peter Robl celebrated the best 24 hours of his riding career when he won his first group One race at Rosehill today on the Anthony Cummings-trained Dealer Principal in the $500,000 Rosehill Guineas.

Just a day after realising a long held ambition by winning his first Albury Gold Cup Robl capped his arrival as a top class Sydney jockey when drove the rapidly improving Dealer Principal to a fine win over Kingda Ka and Littorio.

“I'm overwhelmed,” said after his Guineas victory.

“Words can't describe the feeling when we hit the post.”

Having only his fifth race start, Dealer Principal is now a top ranking contender for the $1.8 million AJC Derby at Randwick on April 26 where a win would be a dream come true for former Victorian Robl.

Robl, 34, hails from Benalla in north-east Victoria but has done the bulk of his riding in the last decade in the NSW Riverina where he has won the southern districts riding premiership for the last six seasons.

His country record brought him to the attention of top Sydney stables and last year he made the decision to begin commuting to metropolitan meetings for rides.

His success led to him making the decision to move to Sydney where he is now riding for a range of trainers including Clarry Conners and Graeme Rogerson, the trainer of Friday's Albury Cup winner Luvuleo (listen to RAS audio interview).

Robl picked up the ride on Dealer Principal after Larry Cassidy elected to switch from the three-year-old after riding him at his last four starts.

Cassidy preferred to ride Steel Giant, who loomed a chance in the straight before finishing fifth.

Robl rode a perfect race on Dealer Principal to have him placed sixth on the fence before taking an inside run turning for home as the field fanned as many riders went looking for better going out wide on what they perceived to be a biased track.

They overdid their tactics as Robl drove Dealer Principal to the lead about four horses off the fence with the Flying Spur gelding staying on too well for a gallant Kingda Ka in a fine trial for the Derby.

Cummings praised Robl's ride and confirmed that the Derby is now the target for Dealer Principal.

"It was a good ride and good rides win good races,” Cummings said.

“He's a very good horse.

“The Derby is on the menu."

The best Derby trials behind Dealer Principal came from the Victoria Derby placegetter Littorio and Largo Lad, both horses making up the most ground over the last 200m to finish third and fourth.

Kingda Ka ran gamely but his trainer Gai Waterhouse indicated she may prefer to switch him back to 1600m for the Doncaster Handicap rather than try the 2400m of the Derby.

The favourite Guillotine's Derby stocks slumped when he failed to run on, finishing a poor 11th.
