Group One winner Northern Meteor has been retired following a reversal of plans to keep the record-breaking three-year-old racing though next season.
Owner Eduardo Cojuangco today announced that he had elected to retire the son of Encosta De Lago to Widden Stud following his second to Takeover Target in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick last Saturday.
“The colt's owner Mr Cojuangco has taken the decision to retire Northern Meteor immediately with the likelihood of a wet track this coming Saturday providing little opportunity for the star colt to show his best if he were to start in the All Aged Stakes,” said Widden Stud's Antony Thompson.
Gai Waterhouse trained Northern Meteor to three wins and two placings from nine starts with earnings of $532,480.
He earned a place in the history by setting a track record at Randwick over 1200 metres when he ran 1.08.32 to win the Listed Sir Brian Crowley Stakes by five lengths last October.
He then went to Melbourne where he won the G1 Coolmore Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington.
Northern Meteor will begin his breeding career at Widden Stud on a fee of $33,000.
