傳統賽事柏斯盃今年縮程至2400米
The distance of the Perth Cup has been reduced and will next year be run over 2400m.
The Cup, traditionally run over two miles, has been in decline according to Perth Racing and the move was made to boost its quality.
Perth Racing chief executive Alasdair Robertson said the Cup had already been downgraded to a Group 2 race and was determined to keep it there.
He also announced the traditional lead-up race, the Cox Stakes, will next year but run over 2100m.
The move is a growing trend among the nation's two mile races leaving only five – the Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide Cups, the Queensland Cup and this weekend's Andrew Ramsden Stakes.
In another effort to ensure the quality of the Perth Summer Carnival, Perth Racing will hire a plane to fly horses from Melbourne to ensure eastern trainers have suitable travel. It will leave shortly after the Melbourne Cup carnival.
