Irish mare Profound Beauty is back on track for a Melbourne Cup start and may have triple winner Glen Boss as her jockey.

Boss, who won three successive Melbourne Cups aboard champion mare Makybe Diva, will ride the Dermot Weld-trained Profound Beauty for the first time in a track gallop at Sandown on Tuesday morning.

Weld made the move to book Boss for the $5 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 4 after receiving a pleasing report on the condition of his mare over the weekend.

Of all the overseas horses in quarantine at Sandown Profound Beauty has given the most concern with her Melbourne Cup bid in doubt last week when she was battling to recover from a bruised off fore hoof.

The injury prevented her from going on to the Sandown track for three days but Weld's travelling foreman Dave Phillips reported that she turned the corner on Friday and was now back on track for a Cup start after he spent hours bathing and poulticing the foot.

Phillips, who has been bringing horses to Australia for Weld since his first success in the Melbourne Cup with Vintage Crop in 1993, rode Profound Beauty in pacework at Sandown on Sunday morning.

Profound Beauty showed no signs of lameness after she cantered with Phillips summarising that she was making “steady progress” towards a Cup start.

Boss said he was looking forward to assessing the mare's condition when he rides her on Tuesday.

"All being well, I think she would be a good ride in the Cup," he said.

Profound Beauty, who has raced only 10 times for three wins and five placings, has 51.5kg in the Melbourne Cup.

Her weight is no problem for Boss, who is currently on target to ride the filly Samantha Miss at 47.5lg in Saturday's Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
