Connections of talented colt Carnero have opted for a new rider and a gear change in Saturday's Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby at Flemington.
Shane Dye, a winner of 101 Group 1 races, returns to Melbourne for the first time since riding Anamato in last year's Caulfield Cup.
After finishing fourth behind Whobegotyou in the AAMI Vase at Moonee Valley on Saturday, connections will try a new rider in the hope he can race at his best over the longer journey.
Like most rivals, trainer Dean Binaisse is banking on the longer 2500m being the lone chink in Whobegotyou's armour, as he remains a raging $1.60 favourite for the race.
Binaisse will also remove the blinkers from
Carnero 
, who tended to go keenly in them last start in the Vase when sitting second behind tearaway leader Sousa.
Binaisse said Carnero's best form – and best chance of beating the favourite – is to be ridden quietly and saved for one last run.
Dye, who won the Victoria Derby on Nothin' Leica Dane in 1995, will also be aboard Keen Commander in the Group 2 Seppelt Salinger Stakes (1200m) up the straight on Saturday.
In other jockey news, Craig Williams, who won last year's Derby on Kibbutz, has been booked to ride My Scotsgrey for trainer Shaun Ritchie.
In Melbourne Cup jockey news, Dwayne Dunn will ride Zarita after partnering the mare to a fourth placing in last weekend's Cox Plate.
Michael Rodd, last year's Melbourne Cup winning rider, has been booked to ride Moonee Valley Cup placegetter Ice Chariot, while Greg Childs, dumped from Zarita for the Cox Plate, will be re-united with the McKee stable to partner Kiwi mare Boundless
