Xtension to miss Royal Ascot meeting due to foot injury
An errant nail has ended plans to campaign BMW Champions Mile winner Xtension at the Royal Ascot meeting next month, but trainer John Moore is still hoping for a trip to Australia's Cox Plate.
Xtension had been headed towards the Queen Anne Stakes, with stablemate Sunny King as both a travelling companion and an entrant in the Golden Jubilee Stakes. "Xtension got a nail in his left hind foot on the training track and the wound became infected," Moore said. "We had to treat it with antibiotics and he missed work. You don't need issues like that setting you back if you're going overseas so we cancelled the Ascot trip. And Sunny King's owner didn't want to travel him over alone, for cost and logistical reasons, so he won't go either."
Moore is hopeful Xtension's owner, Steven Lo Kit-sing, would approve a tilt at the Cox Plate in October in Melbourne. "He hasn't agreed to that trip yet, so it may not happen, but it's still on the agenda if he gives me a green light," he said. "I will still go to Royal Ascot myself. That's one of the key meetings and Ascot was where we found Collection and Xtension in the past."
Hong Kong's only representative now will be Sweet Sanette, with the brilliant mare aimed at the King's Stand Stakes (1,000m).
