Jara's late move could have cost us World Cup - Hamdan

HAMDAN AL MAKTOUM has launched an unexpectedly public attack on the jockey who on Saturday won him the world's richest race - and at the same time has openly criticised the tactics used by Godolphin for Sheikh Mohammed's defeated Discreet Cat.
The normally reticent Sheikh Hamdan, who on Saturday night celebrated the Dubai World Cup triumph of Invasor alongside 19-year-old rider Fernando Jara, on Tuesday revealed to the world his dissatisfaction with the jockey's performance at Nad Al Sheba.
Speaking to reporters at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Hamdan not only criticised Jara but also questioned Godolphin, who he said had denied Discreet Cat any chance of winning the World Cup because of the race plan they devised for the previously unbeaten colt.
Talking first about Invasor - hailed by Hamdan as "the best horse in the world" - the owner claimed that Jara should have committed his mount sooner than he did and argued that he waited too long before sending the American colt past compatriot Premium Tap.
Hamdan told Emirates newspaper the Khaleej Times: "I have spoken to Jara after the race and told him that his mistake could have cost him the race, because the horse may not respond again when asked the question for the second time. "It was a risky misjudgement, and I warned Jara not to do it again. The Panamanian is still very young and did not understand what would have been the tactical cost of such a move."
Hamdan then switched his focus to Discreet Cat, and declared that the tactics employed on his brother's horse had been futile.
He said: "In fact, I expected the Godolphin horse to lose even before the start of the race. Saeed Bin Suroor told me that they were planning to come off the pace and I didn't like the idea, and that was why Discreet Cat failed to keep pace and faded away in the early stages of the trip.
“How do you expect someone to win a race while you are pulling him from his shirt?"
Tactics in the end proved irrelevant for Discreet Cat, who was found to have a throat infection after the race.
Providing an upbeat on Discreet Cat's condition, Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "He has still got an abscess and is being treated. Hopefully he'll get better soon but it will take a bit of time."
