Jim Bolger sleeps as Classic markets goes into meltdown
by Tony O'Hehir and Desmond Stoneham
JIM BOLGER on Tuesday revealed that Teofilo had suffered a “training setback” on Monday afternoon when the Classic markets went into meltdown amid rumours that something was amiss with the champion colt.
Betting markets reopened on the news but with Teofilo out to 5-2 for the Stan James 2,000 Guineas with Sportingodds, and the incredible move for French colt US Ranger forcing him to 5-1 third favourite, from 20-1 on Monday.
Bolger had been uncontactable on Monday evening as betting was suspended on the Stan James 2,000 Guineas and Vodafone Derby but early Wednesday morning a statement emerged from Dublin-based communications business Fleishman Hillard.
The 59-word statement, routed to Fleishman Hillard via Tamso Doyle at Horse Racing Ireland, noted that
Teofilo would be restricted to walking and swimming for a week, but that he remained on course for the Guineas, in 17 days' time.
Speaking later on Tuesday,
Bolger said: “It is only a minor setback. We could have done without it, but I am confident Teofilo will be fit and ready to run at Newmarket.
“He's walking fine today, still a bit shuffly when he trots but he should be fine by the weekend.”
Attempts by the media to contact Bolger on Monday evening proved fruitless and on Tuesday thetrainer offered a simple explanation.
“I had a very busy Sunday, working horses, going racing at the Curragh and on to a funeral afterwards,” he said.
“When I got back into the house late on Monday afternoon I went straight to bed and didn't wake until 10.30 that night. I went down to check on the main horses in the yard and then went back to bed.
“My wife, Jackie, was in Dublin and it certainly wasn't a case of me running from anyone. I have never done that and I never will.
Bolger reported his Stan James 1,000 Guineas candidate,
Finsceal Beo, to be "100 per cent" and "on target" for the fillies Classic on May 6.
No final decision has been made to run the highly promising US Ranger in the 2,000 Guineas but the powerful son ofDanzig has a good chance of being supplemented into the race.
Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget at Pau,
US Ranger runs in the colours of Michael Tabor, who had sought updates on the Teofilo situation during Monday evening, but is part owned by his breeder Joseph Allen. US Ranger is unbeaten in four outings and his average winning distance is over four and a half lengths.
He was treated tenderly at two when he romped home in three races at Bordeaux le Bouscat and Toulouse.
Rouget then sent him to Maisons-Laffitte for the 7f Prix Djebel, a traditional trial for the 2,000 Guineas. US Ranger passed the post four lengths clear of the runner up Prior Warning who was a Listed winner at Deauville on the all weather this season.
Rouget, who has trained at least 150 winners for the past 11 years, has already won 54 races this year.
He said : “US Ranger came out of the Djebel in great form but no official decision has been made about his next race.”
Andy Smith, spokesman for Allen, said: “We are keeping all our options open and probably won't make a decision until the day we have to supplement into the 2,000 Guineas (April 30). The alternative is the French equivalent.”
我比較有興趣嘅反而係US Ranger點部署先符合Ballydoyle最大利益.
