Grade 1 winner HENNESSY (Storm Cat), the leading juvenile sire in 2001, died of an apparent heart attack at Haras La Mission in Argentina on Thursday. The 14-year-old stallion was in Argentina for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season.

Hennessy stood in the Northern Hemisphere at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Kentucky, with the exception of the 2001 breeding season, when he held court in Japan. Popular all over the world, Hennessy is the sire of more than 55 stakes winners. He is the sire of eight stakes winners to date in 2007. His most recent black-type winner, Silver Tree, captured the Fourstardave H. (G2) on August 5.

Hennessy is best known as the sire of Johannesburg, the undefeated juvenile in 2001 who was named champion two-year-old male in England, Ireland, France and the United States. Johannesburg, who also stands at Ashford, is currently the second-leading second-crop sire. He was the second-leading freshman sire last year.

Other top sons of Hennessy currently standing at stud in North America include multiple Grade 1 winner Henny Hughes, who just completed his first year at stud at Darley near Lexington, Grade 2 victor Blazonry, and Grade 3 heroes Cactus Ridge and Wiseman's Ferry.

Hennessy is also represented by Grade 1 heroines Madcap Escapade and Harmony Lodge, as well as the Australian champion Grand Armee and February S. (Jpn-G1) winner Sunrise Bacchus.

Trained throughout his career by D. Wayne Lukas for owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, Hennessy compiled a record of 9-4-3-0 and earned $580,400. He won the 1995 Hopeful S. (G1), Sapling S. (G2) and Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. (G2) and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and Hollywood Prevue S. (G3).

Out of the Grade 1-placed *Hawaii mare Island Kitty, Hennessy is a half-brother to 1997 Ballerina H. (G1) victress Pearl City (Carson City) and multiple Grade 3 winner Shy Tom (Blushing Groom [Fr]). His second dam is the noted producer T. C. Kitten (Tom Cat).
