Winker Watson is "highly unlikely" to run in the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas after suffering a setback.

The Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained colt was 10-1 for the first colts' Classic at Newmarket on May 3 with the sponsors after going through his juvenile season unbeaten culminating in the July Stakes on his third and final start.

Chapple-Hyam told his website: "We took Winker Watson for a canter and Roy Carter, who rides him at home, wasn't happy with the horse. We had him scanned and found that he had a problem behind. It wouldn't be right if we pushed him and so it's unlikely that he will be running in the 2000 Guineas."

He added: "Instead, I hope that we will be able to head to the Irish 2000 Guineas with him or Royal Ascot."

Reports of a problem with the colt first came to light on Saturday night with a statement on betting exchange firm Betfair stating the horse had "experienced some stiffness". Winker Watson is owned by The Comic Strip Heroes, whose members include Betfair founders Andrew Black and Ed Wray.
