FRANKIE DETTORI will have plenty of time to recover from his hectic Royal Ascot schedule after being hit with bans totalling six days by the stewards at Sandown on Friday.

The Derby winning-rider was stood down for four days (Tuesday 26 to Friday June 29) for careless riding on unplaced two-year-old La Voile Rouge in the 7f maiden, and another two days (June 30 and July 1) for using his whip with excessive frequency and in the forehand position down the neck on the same horse.

However, although the ban covers the Budweiser Irish Derby, Dettori is not necessarily ruled out as it is due to be run on the last day of his ban and he can apply to have that two-day part deferred.

Stipendiary steward Paul Barton revealed that Dettori had not asked for a film of the race and had no plans to appeal.

The trouble began just over three furlongs from home when Dettori pulled his mount La Voile Rouge to the left and cannoned into stablemate Adam Eterno.

In the closing stages he used his whip repeatedly in his left hand, and occasionally down the neck, a no-go area.

Explaining the severity of the careless riding ban, Barton said: “He pulled his whip through and steered left handed, barging the other horse out if the way. The severity is down to a combination of the consequences, and the degree of carelessness. It was a real shoulder barge and he knew the other horse was there. There is very little mitigation.”

As for the whip offence, Barton said: “It was the number of times he used it, and also where he used it, on a first-time-out two-year-old. At least four times he was hitting him down the neck in the forehand position.”
