Wenger - January buys should be restricted
Arsene Wenger believes clubs should be restricted to two signings in the January transfer window to maintain the equilibrium of the Premier League.
Newcastle United have been the major movers this month with Yoan Gouffran, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Mathieu Debuchy heading to St. James' Park and Moussa Sissoko and Massadio Haidara set to follow them.
Wenger thinks the current regulations give an unfair advantage to sides who have faced the likes of Newcastle both home and away this season.
"I think it [the January window] should be all completely cut out or limited to two players," said Wenger.
"It is unfair for the league that some teams who have [twice] played, for example, Newcastle, already have an advantage on teams who play Newcastle now they have bought [a number of] players.
"You do not face exactly the same team so I believe the number of players you could buy should be limited.
"It's a market for me that is wrong because the only teams who sell players are teams in financial trouble, or players who are unhappy where they are. So the gamble is much bigger than during the normal transfer period in mid-summer."
Wenger is still in the market for new signings before the transfer window closes next Thursday, but he won't buy for the sake of appearances.
"I am not worried too much about the message I give out, I am worried about what we do on the football pitch. The image and how it looks has never been my worry.
"I live in the real world and the only question I wonder is not how we look to the outside, but how good we are when we are on the football pitch. Can we pass the ball together?
"Therefore it is not to buy just because we look like we want to buy. We buy a player if we think he is good enough to play for us.
"We have two players in every position. That should be enough, plus the young players in behind. But if we find the top-class players in any position, we never refuse to strengthen our squad."
