Question
hello sir, in general, are thoroughbred ridglings(rigs) good racers irrespective of their pedigree and confirmation? would you like to geld all the rigs to stay healthy? i heard that they stay in frustration all the time as one or both of their testicles havent dropped down.
A rig may experience more discomfort than a colt or a gelding therefore causing him to act out more than usual. This may not always be the case, but if so, it would be ideal to have the surgery to remove the ascended testicle, especially if the horse shows real talent and much potential.

Can A "rig" still produce a foal?! HELPPP!? A rig can be any colt with one or both testicles undescended. A rig with one completely descended testicle housed outside of the abdominal cavity can produce live sperm. In order for the testicle to produce live sperm, it has to be housed outside of the abdominal cavity where the temperature is cooler, either in the scrotum or some can be retained just beneath the skin but not make it to the scrotum and the temp is still cool enough to support live sperm production. So, if there is no palpable testicle in the scrotal sac or just beneath the skin there is no possibility of impregnating a mare.
Testosterone (male hormone) production is not affected by body temperature and continues regardless, so despite being infertile, the rig is still a stallion and will exhibit stallion behavior.
Add.......here is an article on cryptorchism in horses. It may also be termed cryptorchidism. Note that rig is short for ridgling, which refers to any colt born with one or both testicles retained in the inguinal canal, as opposed to having descended into the scrotal sac.
When a testicle is retained within the abdominal cavity, it is not possible for viable sperm to be manufactured. Only when at least one testicle has descended sufficiently to be housed outside of the abdominal cavity is it possible for the horse to be fertile.
