St Leger runner-up and Melbourne Cup third Mahler could reappear in the Saval Beg Stakes at Leopardstown on May 28.

The Galileo colt performed with great credit out in Flemington for a three-year-old and was beaten only three lengths.

But trainer Aidan O'Brien is well aware that he was carrying a low weight in a handicap that day and would need to improve vastly to trouble stable companion Yeats in Cup races later in the season.

"He ran well when he finished second in the Leger and he went to Melbourne after that and he ran well there also," said O'Brien.

"He's a horse that stays well, a big long-striding horse and he gallops.

"We'll just play it by ear with him, we might start him off in the Saval Beg and see what is going to happen

"I think he would have to improve a lot to be a Yeats or anything like that."

O'Brien also had some news of Fillies' Mile winner Listen, who was prominent in the ante-post betting for the 1000 Guineas before a setback.

"She's just started back in slow exercise," O'Brien told At The Races.

"It was only a small problem, but we just had to give her the time.

"We are hoping to have her back for the second half of the season."
