Melbourne jockey Dwayne Dunn will be the one off rider for glamour mare Tuesday Joy when she kicks off her spring campaign in the $200,000 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday week.

Dunn, now attached to the Lee Freedman stable, was booked to ride Tuesday Joy after a riding shuffle by her trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Waterhouse's Sydney based stable jockey Nash Rawiller was named as Tuesday Joy's Memsie Stakes rider last week.

However the suspension of her other top stable rider Blake Shinn at Rosehill on Saturday now requires Waterhouse to keep Rawiller in Sydney for rides at the Golden Rose meeting on the same day.

Rawiller will be back on Tuesday Joy at her second run in the Stocks Stakes but will then hand over to Darren Beadman subject to his availability to travel from Hong Kong for her other spring races.

Beadman has a formidable record of three rides on Tuesday Joy for three Group One wins and has an arrangement with owner John Singleton to ride the mare in her G1 starts this spring including the $5 million Melbourne Cup in November.

Shinn was suspended on Saturday at Rosehill and will miss the next two Saturdays, forcing Waterhouse to call on Rawiller, Dan Nikolic and Glen Boss for important stable rides.

Rawiller, who has also been serving a suspension, returns to riding on Saturday at Warwick Farm where he will partner the Waterhouse pair She's Meaner in the Silver Shadow Stakes and Bank Robber in the a ratings 86 event over 1200m.

Dan Nikolic will ride impressive provincial debut winner The Flame for Waterhouse in the Up And Coming Stakes on Saturday as Rawiller cannot make his weight of 54kg.

Waterhouse ha also booked Glen Boss to replace Shin as the rider of impressive filly Maybe I in the $1 million Golden Rose on Saturday week.

Maybe I came off her debut midweek win at Canterbury to run the unbeaten Desuetude to a short head when second in the G3 Run to the Rose at Rosehill last Saturday

Rawiller will be in line to ride Theseo in the Concorde Stakes and Sliding Cube in the Sheraco Stakes when they both resume at Rosehill on Saturday week, depending on the weights they receive.

Waterhouse is excited about the spring prospects of Redoute's Choice mare Sliding Cube after she sped to an easy barrier trial win on the Warwick Farm grass last Friday.

She ran the 800m in 47.86 seconds with her final sectionals of 24.32s and 12.28s being the fastest of the day.

Tuesday Joy and Theseo also trialled strongly on Friday while the classy Kingda Ka won his first trial after a break and will trial again before he resumes.

Leading Kiwi rider Opie Bosson will make the trip to Australia with top race mare Princess Coup this spring.

Trainer Mark Walker has confirmed that Bosson will be aboard Princess Coup through her spring races on both sides of the Tasman.

Bosson rode Princess Coup five times in her early career for two wins including the New Zealand Oaks but was passed over when Walker brought Princess Coup to Australia last season.

Noel Harris, Glen Boss and Kerrin McEvoy rode the mare in Melbourne last spring while Damien Oliver had the mount in all five of her autumn races in Melbourne and Sydney.

Oliver won the G2 St George Stakes at Caulfield on Princess Coup but was then luckless on the mare as she filled second placings at her next three Group One starts in the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes and BMW.

Walker said Bosson has first refusal of the spring ride on Princess Coup with the five-year-old set to resume on August 30 at either Hastings or Tauranga.

Walker said his first-up options for Princess Coup are the wfa Mudgway Partsworld Stakes (1400m) at Hastings or 1200m sprint at Tauranga which he favours as it is closer to his Matamata stables and will reduce the mare's travel time.

Princess Coup will then have her next two starts at Hastings in the Stony Bridge Stakes (1600m) and the defence of her Kelt Capital Stakes crown on October 4 before she heads to Melbourne where she is expected to have a crack at the $3 million Tatts W.S. Cox Plate on October 25.

Noel Harris was the winning jockey in last year's Kelt Stakes and also rode Princess Coup in the Melbourne Cup where she finished 13th.

With Michael Walker sidelined indefinitely Bosson is Walker's designated stable rider even though he has recently moved to a new farm at Palmerston North, some distance from the trainer's Te Akau stables at Matamata.

Princess Coup was among seven Group One winners scheduled to appear in trial; at Te Teko today.

AJC Derby winner Nom Du Jeu, Magic Cape, The Pooka, Gaze, Imananabaa, Pentathon, Red Ruler, Ginga Dude, Veloz, Fully Fledged, Rios, Diamond Deck and Lovetrista were among the stars entered for trials.

Princess Coup was a dual winner at last week's Mercedes Awards where the daughter of Encosta De Lago was won the champion middle distance and stayer titles.

Classy galloper Pompeii Ruler came through a trial at Geelong this morning with flying colours, according to rider Craig Newitt

The Mick Price-trained six-year-old, who has been off the scene for 12 month last weekend, took on three rivals over 1200m and finished a close-up second.

“He's come back terrific,” Newitt told Sport 927.

“Mick's bringing him along nice and slowly but he feels better than ever and his trial this morning was very impressive.

“He hasn't been in the barriers for 12 months but he jumped a couple of lengths in front and went to the line under a hold and hard on the bridle.”

Newitt said the Memsie Stakes was the likely start point to Pompeii Ruler's spring campaign where the plan is to get him back to the Cox Plate.

A winner of seven of his 14 career starts, Pompeii Ruler was narrowly beaten in the 2006 Cox Plate behind Fields Of Omagh and El Segundo.

The following autumn he scored his biggest career success in the Group 1 Australian Cup.

Last spring he had just one start, in the Liston Stakes 12 months ago, but injured a tendon and has been off the scene since.

Should the entire return to the top level the Price stable will have a big hand in the feature races over the spring, with new stable star Light Fantastic keeping his unbeaten record intact with a first-up win in the Liston Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Senior jockey Rodney Quinn has worked overtime to be fit to resume his association with class filly Portillo at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Quinn is booked to ride the Darley-owned Portillo in the $125,000 Silver Shadow Stakes but feared he may have been forced to forfeit the ride when he was injured at the Warwick Farm trials last Friday.

He twisted an ankle and was told by doctors he could be out of the saddle for up to four weeks due to suspected ligament damage.

“I told them no way – the carnival is starting and I was not going to miss the chance to ride Portillo,” Quinn told Racing and Sports.

With the help of a herbal medication Quinn worked on the injury over the weekend and shocked his doctor with his recovery when he had another examination on Monday.

“I got hold of a secret Chinese medication and kept rubbing it into the ankle all weekend,” Quinn said.

“It did the trick – the doctor couldn't believe the improvement when I saw him after the weekend.

“I'll be right for Saturday because these days I can't afford to miss these opportunities.”

Quinn was a stalwart of the Crown Lodge stable before the Ingham Bloodstock sellout to Sheik Mohammed that placed the Peter Snowden-trained Portillo under Darley ownership.

“I am still there riding work and will take what ever comes my way,” Quinn said.

“Kerrin McEvoy now has the pick of the stable rides and Corey Brown is there as number two but they can't ride them all so I will just keep punching away.”

Quinn rode Portillo in three of her six starts last season for wins in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes and G2 Magic Night Stakes and her third in the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes.

The Red Ransom filly, a half sister to Group One winner and sire Snowland, finished the season with more than $465,000 prizemoney and a Timeform rating of 113 that placed her among the top 20 juveniles to race last season.

Quinn will also ride the Gerald Ryan-trained Universal Colours at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Quinn has ridden Universal Colours at his last three starts for a Rosehill win and two close seconds at Kembla Grange and Rosehill.
