Archipenko is to miss the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday week because of a foot injury.

The four-year-old should have worked on the Rowley Mile on Thursday but that was put back 24 hours after he pulled off the shoe from his near fore.

However, trainer Mike de Kock discovered the Group One winner was still not 100 per cent.

"He's not sound this morning. It's nothing major, it's just going to cost us running in the Champion Stakes," said the South African handler.

"It's a major setback not to be running in the race but in terms of the horse's wellbeing, it's not a major setback.

"At this stage we're not even sure what it is. I sent the horse off to the vets to have a scan and a X-ray but, at the moment, we can't find anything.

"I'm hoping it's only a niggly thing that's going to cost us a week or two. Then we can have him ready for Hong Kong in December."

Archipenko, runner-up in the Arlington Million on his latest start, was third favourite on the exchanges for Champion Stakes honours.

De Kock also had news of Arlington Million runner-up Archipenko, who was forced to miss this weekend's Champion Stakes due to injury.

"We now know it is definitely just his knee that is the problem," De Kock continued.

"There is no chip or anything like that, he has just jarred his knee up a bit so he will need a few weeks off.

"We'll see how he is after a couple of weeks before making any plans - my feeling is we will just take him to Dubai and get him ready for the Duty Free."

Archipenko will now head to Hong Kong after being ruled out of Saturday's Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket.

Trainer Mike de Kock is cursing his luck after a late setback ruled his star out of the Group One showpiece.

"Archipenko now needs two to three weeks of rest for his knee. It's probably going to affect our Hong Kong plan with that only seven weeks away so we'll go off to the Dubai Carnival with him.

"It's absolutely gutting to get so close with him and to be honest I couldn't have had him better, he was absolutely flying, but that's racing."
