FOUR-time Group 1 winner Mosheen has been retired after revelations the mare fractured a hind leg.
Co-owner Phil Sly told Racing Network that Mosheen will be sent to Japan in January to be served by former champion Deep Impact.
Sly said Mosheen injured herself in the Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday when she finished sixth behind Streama.
He said scintigraphy results revealed his worst fears. Mosheen had sustained a fracture to her near side tibia.
“She could come back next autumn. Vets said that a comeback was possible, but what else does she have to prove? Sly asked.
“It was the best decision for the horse. I spoke to Katsumi (Yoshida, the other co-owner) and she’ll be going to Japan early next year.
“She’s been an absolute super star. She won four Group 1s, what more could I ask.”
Mosheen, runner-up in the Golden Slipper, won the Crown Oaks, Australian Guineas, Randwick Guineas and Storm Queen Stakes.
Two starts ago Mosheen won the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410 m) at Flemington and she appeared to be in a winning position on Saturday.
“She loomed and just when we thought she would let down, she goes to lay back in and she never does that,” Sly said.
“We think that’s when she did it.”
Mosheen won eight of her 18 starts with a further five placings and $2,780,350 in prizemoney.
