Illness may have cost The United States a shot at Saturday's Cox Plate, but the spring setback could pave the way for the Lloyd Williams stable to have its first runner at the Hong Kong International meeting in December.

Part-owner Nick Williams said after The United States had bolted away with the Crystal Mile that the $2 million Emirates Stakes over 2000m was now firmly on the horse's agenda, as was an international trip possibly for the 2400-metre Hong Kong Cup.

The Williams stable has had a Cox Plate runner every year since 2006 but Williams said a bout of the 'man flu' for The United States was enough for them to bypass the race this year.

"It wasn't anything serious but it meant he missed work for about 10 days and you can't go into a meeting with the best horse in Australia on a prep like that," Nick Williams explained.
