Eclipse roll of honour
by Racing Post Staff
Horse of the year
INVASOR Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Ex-Uruguayan triple crown winner unbeaten in four starts after undercooked fourth in UAE Derby, culminating in title-winning success in Breeders’ Cup Classic. Being aimed at Dubai World Cup; reappears in Donn Handicap at Gulfstream on February 3.
2-y-o male
STREET SENSE Carl Nafzger
Won only twice in five but never ran a bad race. Electrifying in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, scoring by runaway ten lengths. On Kentucky Derby trail.
2-y-o filly
DREAMING OF ANNA Wayne Catalano
Hard to fault after going unbeaten in four, including both dirt and turf (against males). Solid all-the-way victory at Breeders’ Cup left connections thinking of taking on colts again in 2007 - possibly at Churchilll Downs.
3-y-o colt
BERNADINI Tom Albertrani
Domianted his division after Barbaro injury with stunning six-race winning streak in summer included Preakness, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Fell just short against elders at Breeders’ Cup, a defeat that handed Horse of the Year honours to Invasor. Retired.
3-y-o female
WAIT A WHILE Todd Plecther
No match for Ouija Board at Breeders’ Cup but had looked pretty good herself in four consecutive turf victories after being switched off the main track. Therre was no dominant dirt filly, so she became a rare divisional champion from the turf.
Older male
INVASOR see above
Older female
FLEET INDIAN Todd Pletcher
Unbeaten in six outings prior to breaking down at Breeders’ Cup. Survived to join broodmare ranks.
Turf male
MIESQUE’S APPROVAL Marty Wolfson
Thoguh he won five of seven starts, upset victory in Breeders’ Cup Mile was enough to win wide-open division by just five votes from Arlington Million winner The Tin Man, with English Channel close third.
Turf female
OUIJA BOARD Ed Dunlop
Blew away North Amrican audience at Breeders’ Cup. They’ve got nothing to touch her. With a bit more luck at Belmont Park in 2005, she might well have been the first three-time winner at the Breeders’ Cup.
Sprinter
THOR’S ECHO Doug O’Neill
Secured open division when following up Breeders’ Cup win with another Grade 1 at Laurel. Likely to run in Dubai Golden Shaheen (second in 2006).
Steeplechaser
McDYNAMO Sanna Hendriks
Third Eclipse award for outstanding US-trained jumper, who has overcome physical problems to win four Breeders’ Cup Chases.
Owner
DARLEY STABLE/LAEL STABLES
Sheikh Mohammed’s US string runs under the title of his racing operation and carry the famous maroon-and-white silks. Darley topped the owners’ prize-money lists, thanks mainly to Bernardini but Eclipse voters also honoured Barbaro’s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stable. They received equal votes and both receive an Eclipse award.
Trainer
TODD PLETCHER
Third straight Eclipse after breaking his won prize-money record in 2006, plus setting new marks for both Graded-stakes wins and stakes wins.
Jockey
EDGAR PRADO
Repeat winner. Though his mounts earned a bit less than Garrett Gomez, his quick thinking on the stricken Barbaro in the Preakness may have swayed voters.
Apprentice
JULIEN LEPAROUX
Based with Patirck Biancone, French-born rider was a phenomenon, topping the continent overall in races won with 403 and winning riding titles across Kentucky at Churchill Downs, Keeneland and Turfway.
Breeder
ADENA SPRINGS see Bloodstock Desk
Merit award
JOHN NERUD
Trainer of the great Dr. Fager, honoured for playing integral part in foundation of Breeders’ Cup
Special award
ROY AND GRETCHEN JACKSON AND NEW BOLTON HOSPITAL
Barbaro’s owners and equine hospital behind Kentucky Derby winner’s treatment at University of Pennsylvania.作者:
