Lack of funding derails the Pimlico Special

ONE of the best-known races in the US is under threat following news that the Pimlico Special, the Grade 1 event on the day before the Preakness and won last year by Invasor on his US debut, will not be run this year due to lack of funds.
“Unfortunatley, we have no choice,” said Maryland Jockey Club chief operating officer Lou Raffeto. “We have limited purse monies available, are facing increased operation from growing slot-fuelled purses in West Virginia and Delaware and are about to face and entirely new wave of competition this year when Pannsylvania’s racetracks begin their slot operations. “Our first priority must be our local horsemen who support our program on a daily basis throughout the year.”
The Special, inaugurated in 1937, was won the following year by the storied Seabiscuit from triple crown winner War Admiral.
It is, along with the Preakness Stakes and the Frank DeFrancis Memorial Dash, one of only three Grade 1 races hosted by the Maryland Jockey Club at either Pimlico or Laurel.
