Going Ballistic ran down the 1-5 favorite, Grasshopper, in the stretch for a one-length win in the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on Saturday. Grasshopper held second, finishing 2 1/2 lengths clear of third-place finisher Past the Point.
The Super Derby anchored what was the richest card in the history of Louisiana Downs. In addition to that race, there were four turf stakes on the undercard, each worth $200,000.
Going Ballistic ($19.80) trailed the field for much of the 1 1/8-mile race, as Forty Acres jumped out to the lead and ran the opening quarter-mile in 23.72 seconds. Past the Point and Grasshopper fell in behind the leader, as Going Ballistic continued to trail through a half-mile in 48.34 seconds.
Going Ballistic began to pick off rivals on the final turn, and dug in during the drive to catch Grasshopper. Going Ballistic covered the distance over a fast track in 1:50.32. Cliff Berry rode Going Ballistic for trainer Donnie Von Hemel.
Going Ballistic was moving back to dirt for the Super Derby following a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes on the turf at Arlington Park. He races for Kindred Thoroughbreds. In his last start on dirt, Going Ballistic was third in the $250,000 Iowa Derby.
A son of Lite the Fuse, Going Ballistic has now won 5 of 16 starts and $671,242.作者:
