The 1988 English and Irish Derby winner Kahyasi, better known in Australia as the sire of Champion jumper Karasi, has died in France, aged 23.
Kahyasi was prepared to his two Classic successes by champion trainer Luca Cumani, who described the son of Ile de Bourbon (USA) (ex Kadissya, by Blushing Groom) as a “great horse and great friend.”
Kahyasi was raced by the Aga Khan and was his third winner of the famous Epsom classic.
The veteran stallion was still performing stud duties up until last week in France before an inoperable tumor was diagnosed and he was put down on humane grounds.
Among his 30-plus stakes winners were five Derby winners and Australian-trained champion jumper Karasi, a winner of the Nakayama Grand Jump on three occasions.
However he has become better known as a damsire and progeny from his daughters include this year's dual Classic winner Zarkava (by Zamindar), dual Breeders' Cup winner Banks Hill (Danehill) and outstanding sire Dansili (Danehill).
Kahyasi was ridden to his English Derby success by Ray Cochrane, who gained notoriety in Australia for his winning ride on Taufan's Melody in the 1998 Caulfield Cup.
Cumani told the Racing Post “It is the end of an era. I owe this horse a lot. He was a great horse and friend, and the easiest horse in the world to train. He was so relaxed and so professional as a racehorse, and as a sire he has been very underrated; as a broodmare sire he has been excellent.”
