The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday 9th August is extending its international reach this year as the world's two all-time record-breaking jockeys, Jorge Ricardo from Brazil and Russell Baze from the USA, prepare to meet at Ascot for the very first time.
Never before has a South American jockey taken part in the event, while Baze will be only the second from the USA. The participation of a Turkish jockey, current champion Halis Karatas, is another first for the competition.
Baze and Ricardo will meet for the first time at a press conference at Ascot on Thursday 7th August, when the team selection process and draw for mounts will take place. They will be team-mates on the Rest of the World team, captained by Japanese legend Yutaka Take, who rode his first Ascot winner in this event 12 months ago.
On 9th January this year, Ricardo became the first ever jockey to reach 10,000 winners when riding a five-timer at San Isidro racecourse in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he moved from Rio De Janeiro in 2006. Baze matched that feat on 1st February when winning the third race at Golden Gate Fields, near the eastern shoreline of San Francisco Bay. The two have been going head-to-head for the world record of career victories since December 2006 when Baze broke the previous record of 9,530 set by Lafitt Pincay.
“The two headline riders at this year's event have over 20,000 winners between them on the other side of the Atlantic,” said Charles Barnett, Chief Executive at Ascot. “Given their profile, it's remarkable that they haven't yet met let alone ridden in a race together, but that makes it all the more exciting for us and our racegoers. Who would have thought that it would take a jockeys' competition in the UK to set up this intriguing scenario?!”
Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, commented:
“Extending the international appeal of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is one of the key aims of the competition and something close to our own hearts, so to be welcoming a South American jockey for the first time is particularly exciting.
“We're also delighted that the current Champion Jockey in Turkey, Halis Karatas, will be representing that country for the first time. His participation is sure to add yet more international interest, especially at a time when the profile of racing is growing at such a rapid rate in his homeland.”
Ricardo has ridden in a handful of races in the USA and once in Europe in the 1994 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Baze has ridden in Canada at Toronto and Vancouver, but this will be the first time he has ever competed outside North America.
Jorge Ricardo said today: “I am really excited with the invitation to participate in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
“My warmest thanks to Ascot Racecourse and to Dubai Duty Free for giving me the opportunity to compete with some of the best riders in the world, and especially to meet Russell Baze, my rival in the competition to be "The Winningmost Rider in the World".
Russell Baze said: “I am honoured and excited to be participating in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. I am really looking forward to competing with and against all the fine riders who will be present, especially Jorge Ricardo.
“The conditions I will face in this event will be quite a departure from what is normal for me and I am eager for the challenge it will present. It should be a lot of fun. Good luck to all.”
Halis Karatas will ride for the European Team under the captaincy of Frankie Dettori* and alongside fellow Italian Mirco Demuro, who finished runner-up in three races when he took part in the 2001 Shergar Cup. As well as huge success in Turkey, Karatas has also ridden several winners at the Dubai Carnival.
The Great Britain team will be captained by Hayley Turner, runner-up in the race for the Silver Saddle trophy, presented to the event's leading individual rider, last year. Her team-mates will be the 2006 UK champion jockey, Ryan Moore*, and last year's joint champion, Seb Sanders*.
Jamie Spencer*, who shared the UK jockeys' title last year with Seb Sanders, will captain the Irish team. His team-mates will be this year's Derby-winning jockey, Kevin Manning, and either Johnny Murtagh* or Jimmy Fortune*.
As well as all the action on the track, there will be additional activities throughout Shergar Cup day, including the opportunity for racegoers to get autographs from the jockeys before racing and a post race concert featuring artistes from the 'Here & Now' tour. The famous names of the 80s will be performing their set of classics beginning at approximately 4.45pm. Acts include ABC, Bananrama, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Belinda Carlisle, Paul Young and T'Pau.

SCOT is set to be blessed with a full quota of runners and reserves for its Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup card on Saturday - something that has not always been the case in the past - after yesterday's entry of 212 for the six races.
That figure is being viewed as just reward for Ascot's decision to change the entry system for the international jockeys' competition from an early closing event - where trainers were required to nominate horses several weeks earlier - to Britain's more traditional five-day entry system for the weekend's racing.
“It has been a big plus, and thankfully it doesn't look as though this time we'll be struggling for runners or reserves, as has occasionally been the case in previous years,” said course spokesman Nick Smith yesterday.
He added: “There's another advantage, in that previously not all the races were as competitive as we'd have liked because of the penalty system as a result of the necessity for early closing, but that is now resolved.”
Like Frankie Dettori, Jimmy Fortune has dropped out due to a commitment elsewhere. Fortune is likely to be replaced by Richard Hughes.
Jamie Spencer, who missed last year's competition, is likely to be available. Organisers were waiting to hear yesterday from Sir Michael Stoute over the availability of another of last year's absentees, Ryan Moore.
At Thursday's final declaration stage, each race will have ten runners, with two reserves. Reserves may be added to the field any time up to 45 minutes before the start of the race.
Smith added: “While the addition of a late reserve may complicate betting matters to a degree, we believe in a competition such as this it's better to have a rule 4 than an empty stall.”
Last year, the Rest of the World team scored a 20-point win over Ireland, with Britain third and Europe in fourth.
Ascot, which also stages a 1980s-themed post-racing two-hour concert, can expect a largely dry afternoon, with temperatures around the seasonal average on Saturday, according to the Met Office.
Their spokesman said yesterday: “It is likely to become increasingly cloudy during the day, with the chance of rain moving in around dusk.”
The ground was officially good yesterday, with clerk of the course Chris Stickels saying: "We're forecast an unsettled week, and if that is the case I'd expect the ground to be good on Saturday.”
Like Frankie Dettori, Jimmy Fortune has dropped out due to a commitment elsewhere. Fortune is likely to be replaced by Richard Hughes.

FRANKIE DETTORI is back in the fold for Saturday's Shergar Cup - but he has swapped sides as a late substitute.
The Italian-born superstar has ridden in nearly every renewal of Ascot's team competition but after representing the Rest Of The World for many years and then Europe in 2007 when the format changed, he will now join Hayley Turner and Seb Sanders in the British side.
"I'm delighted to be riding in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup again," said Dettori.
"Obviously I'm changing teams having ridden for Europe last year but I have lived here for 25 years and been British champion jockey three times so I think I'm pretty well qualified to join Hayley and Seb on the home team!
"I'm claiming dual nationality - my Arsenal shirt is my passport!"
With Ryan Moore unable to ride in Saturday's competition at Ascot, a vacancy arose for the final place on the team.
"Ryan's confirmation of commitments elsewhere coincided with a call from Frankie's agent to let us know that Godolphin were unexpectedly able to release him, so everything fell into place really," said Nick Smith, head of public relations at Ascot.
"Having won all five British Classics, ridden 39 Royal Ascot winners and lived here almost all his working life, if anyone can justifiably claim to have a foot in two camps, Frankie can.
"The reality is that Ascot means Frankie and to most people, Frankie means racing.
"For a day like the Shergar Cup, with literally thousands of kids and first time racegoers here, we'd be letting people down if we didn't grab this opportunity to let racing's greatest public asset take the stage.
"It's particularly gratifying and says a great deal about the progress of the event that he is so keen to ride."
The Ireland team contains Jamie Spencer as captain plus Richard Hughes and Kevin Manning while Europe will be represented by Gerald Mosse, Mirco Demuro, Halis Karatas.
There is anexciting team for the Rest Of The World, with Japanese legend Yutaka Take joined by the two winning-most jockeys of all time, Russell Baze and Jorge Ricardo.

Yutaka Take got the Rest of the World team off to a flying start in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup with a pillar-to-post success aboard David Nicholls' Strike Up The Band.
The team captain quickly had the 3-1 joint favourite striding along at the head of affairs in the Barclays Shergar Cup Dash, and his willing partner kept on to collect by a length and a quarter.
Halis Karatas, representing the European squad, came home second aboard Fathom Five while British team member Frankie Dettori was third on Evens And Odds.
Take said: "We were quite confident as the horse has been second here the last twice and Frankie Dettori told me he has a lot of speed."
Nicholls, speaking from Haydock, said: "He has come up against a couple of good horses recently so he deserved to win, and Yutaka gave him a great ride."

Yutaka Take stole the show in the Titanic Quarter Shergar Cup Distaff as the Japanese rider swept from last to first aboard Eoghan O'Neill's Nans Joy.
The filly has disappointed since winning a Listed race in Germany early in the summer but came good as Take swept down the outside on the 7-1 chance to collect by a length and a half.
O'Neill said: "I first met Yutaka 18 years ago when I was working in America and he came across to ride.
"I was delighted to draw him to ride for me and he is dynamite.
"He has great hands, settled her nicely and she finished her race well. It wasn't the plan to come wide but he said they went very fast and he did the right thing."
The win puts Take in strong position to collect the Silver Saddle for leading rider and his team edged further clear on the leaderboard.

Gerald Mosse hit back for the European contingent as he guided Walter Swinburn's Shifting Star to a hat-trick of wins in the Porthault Shergar Cup Sprint.
The 7-2 favourite was following up a recent win over Ascot's six furlongs and crossed the line with a length and a quarter to spare over America's winning-most jockey Russell Baze on Al Muheer.
Mosse said: "He travelled well early on but I didn't want to ask him to do too much in the early part of the race. I took my time and he is a lovely horse.
"I am very happy to win for Walter as he is a very good friend."
The Hong Kong-based jockey added: "I will be over here for six months next summer and I hope to get some good European support."
Swinburn added: "We were touched off at the Shergar Cup a couple of years ago with Tucker, so it is great to get a win on the board."
