International jockey Kerrin McEvoy made amends for his five-race wipeout at Kembla Grange on Wednesday with a winner in the opening event at Gosford on Thursday.
But the 27-year-old had to survive a protest before landing his first winner as Darley's number one rider in Australia.
He claimed the milestone on the Peter Snowden-trained Kyalami, who started the $2.20 favourite in the Gosford City Glass Handicap (1200m).
The four-year-old shifted out during the closing stages, causing interference to apprentice Peter Wells' mount Tha' Hab who finished three-quarters of a length second.
Acting chief steward Tim Saladine said McEvoy was not to blame for the incident.
"Stewards are of the opinion that Kyalami would still have won without the interference," Saladine said.
"Kerrin did everything right, he stopped and tried to check his mount but the horse just kept running out and we placed a warning on the horse's manners."
McEvoy returned to Australia last week after a successful overseas career where he was number two rider behind Frankie Dettori for the Godolphin thoroughbred empire.
He made a disappointing return to local riding ranks at Kembla Grange yesterday when he was winless from five rides, four of those for Snowden.
Meanwhile, apprentice Mitchell Beadman was given a four-meeting suspension for his ride on fourth-placed Danlass in the UD Trucks Men Of League Cup (1100m) at Gosford.
The youngster caused interference to Josh Parr's mount Crown Willie near the 150 metres and he pleaded guilty to careless riding.
His suspension begins next Thursday and he will eligible to resume riding on August 22.
