MARCHAND D'OR again showed why he is regarded as Europe's supreme sprinter with a hat-trick of wins in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.
In the process the 13-8 favourite became the first French racehorse in history to win three runnings of any Group 1 race.
As at Newmarket in the July Cup, Davy Bonilla had the grey held up towards the rear as the field bowled along thought the first half-mile.
Inside the final two furlongs the runners began to spread out and African Rose, trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, went to the front of affairs.
The Observatory filly held the lead into the final furlong but by this time Bonilla had fired Marchand D'Or through the field to take the advantage and hold off 16-1 chance African Rose to win by a length.
Fellow grey Belliflore made good progressfrom the back of the field to take third at 65-1 with the Richard Fahey-trained 58-1 shot Utmost Respect finishing fourth having had an interrupted passage.
Diabolical, ridden by Frankie Dettori for Godolphin, put up an improved showing running well for much of the race before fading in the final half furlong to finish fifth.
Freddie Head is enjoying a golden summer at the moment with the Group 1 wins of Tamayuz and Goldikova as well as the exploits of his sprinting star.
He said:"It is great heis now in the record books as he is a real champion.
"I think he will go to Haydock next and then the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc day will be his target after that."作者:
