The topweight in tomorrow's Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, Niconero, may be saved for another day after drawing an outside gate.
Trainer David Hayes felt the dual Group 1 winner faced a near impossible task from his wide gate and may instead look to Sydney for this next run.
“We're seriously thinking about saving him and sending him to Sydney for the George Main,” Hayes told Sport 927.
“The small field size over there at weight-for-age is looking seriously attractive so he may not run.”
“He's topweight and (drawn barrier) 20. If he drew in he'd definitely run because he's such a good Caulfield horse but from 20 it's going to be a big ask.”
The $400,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes is over a mile at Randwick next weekend and is run under weight-for-age conditions.
Hayes may instead rely on stablemate Friday Creek in the 1400m feature, who is going better than his form suggest according to the stable.
The leading trainer said Friday Creek didn't handle the straight track at Flemington last start in the Bobby Lewis Quality and has added the blinkers for this weekend's tough assignment.
Sportingbet has Niconero , fitter for two runs from a spell, as an $18.00 chance tomorrow while former Sydney galloper Friday Creek is at $31.00.
Hayes has a big team engaged through the feature races tomorrow at Caulfield.
The Fuzz, Kibbutz and Indio Glorioso tackle the Group 1 Underwood Stakes, while he saddles up three-year-olds Hips Don't Lie and Oval Affair in the Thousand Guineas Prelude and Von Costa De Hero in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.
Distinctive Lass tackles the South Yarra Stakes for mares while Zagreb puts his Caulfield Cup credentials on the line in the Naturalism Stakes.
Calico Blue, Manna Miss and Hifalutin tackle the Glasshouse Café Handicap, Dual Hemishpere the New Litho Plate and Mansion House lines up in the Hussonet Cup.作者:
