Glamour filly Samantha Miss is just one race away from becoming only the second horse to win all four legs of Sydney's Princess Series after a sparkling performance to win the $150,000 Tea Rose Stakes at Rosehill today.
Samantha Miss, a Group One winner of the Champagne Stakes in the autumn, is unbeaten in three Group races since she resumed last month and is now under consideration for a start in the $3 million Tatts W.S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 25.
Her trainer Kris Lees said he had already paid the second acceptance fee for the Cox Plate to ensure he kept the weight-for-age championship on the table for the filly.
“The second acceptances for the Cox Plate are due on Tuesday but I did it yesterday just in case,” Lees said after the $1.5 million filly outclassed her rivals to score by a soft one a three quarter lengths.
“She keeps stepping up so I hope it doesn't stop.
“She's got that explosive turn of foot which is very important.
“We are teaching her to relax in her races and it suits her."
The Silver Shadow Stakes at Warwick Farm and Furious Stakes at Randwick gave Samantha Miss the first two legs of the Princess Series and she will now attempt to complete the four-race grand slam in the Group One $400,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 4.
If she wins the Flight Stakes she will join Angst (1993) as the only fillies to sweep the Princess Series.
However all Samantha Miss will receive is the glory as the AJC and STC this year scrapped the $250,000 bonus that was offered for any filly winning the four races as a cost cutting exercise.
Hugh Bowman has ridden Samantha Miss in her last four wins and believes she can measure up against the older horses in the Cox Plate if Lees decides to take that path.
'What a great filly, it's a privilege to be her rider,” Bowman said.
“They slackened right off from the 900m so I got going a bit early and she just disposed of them.”
Bowman sat back on Samantha Miss and was second last in the field of eight before she unleashed what is becoming her trademark sprint to reel in the leaders quickly in the straight.
Stripper and Portillo, regarded as her main rivals, could not match her burst of acceleration with the leader Kimillsy and Glowlamp both showing better fight to kick back and hold the down the minor placings.
Lees said that the Melbourne program for Samantha Miss would be resolved after she contests the Flight Stakes.
She would have only 10 days from the Flight Stakes to the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield but would have the luxury of three weeks to prepare for the Cox Plate on October 25 where three-year-old fillies have to carry only 46kg.
Only one 3YO filly – Surround – has won the Cox Plate since its inception in 1922.作者:
