Classy pair Maybe Better and Kaphero are major casualties from last Saturday's Caulfield Guineas meeting
Trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith today confirmed that Maybe Better will be retired after suffering injuries in the Winning Edge Presentation Stakes.
Mayfield-Smith notified the stewards that x-rays taken from Maybe Better after the race have revealed two bone chips to the off fore fetlock and a weakness in the cannon bone that could lead to a fracture.
The extent of the injuries end a career that yielded six wins and five placings from 29 starts and more than $953,000 prizemoney.
Maybe Better, now six, surged to prominence as a spring 4YO in 2006 when he won the Listed JRA Trophy, G3 Coongy Handicap and G3 Saab Quality before finishing third in the Melbourne Cup behind the Japanese pair Delta Blues and Pop Rock.
He has since been a frustration for Mayfield-Smith, failing to win another race and being a late scratching from last year's Melbourne Cup on race day when he was found to be lame.
Kaphero's spring campaign is also over after his failuire in the Schillaci Stakes on Saturday.
Trainer Leon Corstens reported that Kaphero was very lame in the near fore leg and would have to be spelled.作者:
