English stayer All The Good's bid to become the first internationally-trained horse to win the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double has been tempered with a two kilogram penalty.

All The Good will now carry 55kg in the Melbourne Cup after Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter announced the penalty following the striking chestnut's impressive win at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Godolphin-owned six-year-old stayer carried 53kg in the Caulfield Cup which he won by three-quarters of a length from New Zealander Nom Du Jeu with local Barbaricus third.

New Zealand mare Ethereal (2001) is the last of 11 horses to have won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double in the same year. She was also penalised 2kg for her Caulfield Cup win.

Last year's Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly was penalised 1.5kg and finished eighth in the Melbourne Cup.

The Godolphin stable was expecting a 2kg penalty for All The Good who has won seven races, six of them from 2400m to 2816m.

Carpenter said All The Good had emerged as a stayer of the highest quality, winning the Newburgh Handicap (2671m) in England in August and the Caulfield Cup at his past two starts.

He said while there was only 2-1/2 lengths between the first seven runners home on Saturday and a number of his rivals produced outstanding Melbourne Cup trials, All The Good was impressive in victory and should be further suited over the longer distance at Flemington.

"In determining the penalty I was also mindful that the Melbourne Cup represents a new challenge with the two best stayers in the world, Septimus and Efficient, set to run along with a number of other quality entrants who did not contest the Caulfield Cup," Carpenter said.

Baughurst's convincing win in the Group Three David Jones Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday earned him a half kilo penalty, taking his Melbourne Cup weight to 51kg.

As a result the Bill Wilde-trained seven-year-old has progressed from 42nd to 36th in the latest elimination order.

Baughurst has won twice since weights were released as well as being placed in the Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and The Bart Cummings (2500m).

"He was a dominant winner last Saturday in recording his first victory at Group level," Carpenter said.

Melbourne Cup third declarations close at noon next Monday.
