Melbourne’s wild weather has had tragic consequences with the promising galloper Sunburnt Land killed after being struck by lightning overnight.
The Ellerton stable has confirmed that the brilliant son of Scenic was the victim of the freak of nature while having a break in a paddock.
Understandably Ellerton was too distressed to comment but a stable representative said that more information would be available when the young trainer was fully informed on the situation.
The five-year-old had recently made a strong transition to Group One racing, performing creditably when third to Swick and Turffontein in the Patinack Farms Classic last Saturday at Flemington.
Sunburnt Land’s career was tragically cut short after eighteen career starts, winning eight and earning $379,000 in prizemoney.
His best career win was the GII Thai Airways International Sprint (1100m) on Caulfield Cup day.
