Trainer Gwenda Markwell has reluctantly agreed to the retirement of her Group One winner Grand Zulu.
Markwell has bowed to the wishes of Grand Zulu's Hong Kong based owner to retire the 8YO gelding after he finished last over 1800m at Randwick last Saturday.
“I was hoping we could give him at last one more try and have him ridden aggressively to wake him up,” Markwell told Racing and Sports.
“I think he is got too lazy and Rodney (jockey Rod Quinn) has always been kind to him.”
“I know he has been struggling but there are no issues with him and I just think he could have shown something if he was tried riding him more aggressively.”
Grand Zulu won four races in 37 starts and gave Markwell her biggest training successes when he won the Group One BMW at Rosehill in 2004 as a three-year-old.
After the BMW he spent a season in Hong Kong where he was placed twice in six starts before returning to Markwell's Kembla Grange stables in 2006.
He has since raced 24 times for four minor placings.
Grand Zulu was placed in eight races including the G1 Rosehill Guineas, G2 Hill Stakes, G2 P.J.O'Shea Stakes, Listed Sky High Stakes and the Listed Wagga Cup.

贏過G1, 之後閹了, 為了一嘗香港打比冠軍, 似乎失多於得.

反而隻幻影神偷返黎澳洲後表現幾好
跑左2次第2
