Super filly Samantha Miss warmed up for her return in next month's Light Fingers Stakes with a quiet trial at Wyong on Thursday which pleased trainer Kris Lees.
As per instructions from the Newcastle horseman, jockey Hugh Bowman took Samantha Miss out the back in the 800-metre hitout and that's where she stayed, finishing last of seven in the heat won by Walking Or Dancing in a time of 50.96 seconds.
"I told Hughie to drop out the back and let her work home under her own steam and that's exactly what happened," Lees said.
"It was just a fair trial which is all I expected from her over 800 metres but Hughie was very happy with the way she felt and that was the main thing, so I was pleased about that.
"She's still pretty big in condition and had a good blow after it but she is well within herself."
Lees believes Samantha Miss could be vulnerable first-up in the Group Two Light Fingers (1200m) at Randwick on February 14.
"I'm not expecting too much from her, she's travelling more like a mile and a half (2400m) horse now, but things went her way first-up last time over the trip and she won," Lees said.
The Redoute's Choice filly stormed home from the back of the field to defeat Glowlamp by a neck in the Group Three Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm when racing first-up in August last year.
Samantha Miss has not raced since she thrashed her opposition in the VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 6.
That win gave Samantha Miss her third Group One victory after winning the Flight and Champagne Stakes, both over 1600 metres.
Lees has nominated Samantha Miss for the Doncaster Mile in April but said the only definite autumn targets at this stage were the Group Two Surround Stakes (1400m) on March 7 and the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) two weeks later.
"We'll assess things after the Coolmore run and let her tell us what's next after that," Lees said.
Stablemate and Group One-placed Absolutelyfabulous finished one spot ahead of Samantha Miss in the trial and Lees said she was on track to resume in the Listed Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on February 21.
"She also did what we wanted her to do and is going nicely," Lees said.
Two starts back Absolutelyfabulous finished second to Forensics in the Group One Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on November 1 and followed that up with a second to Bernicia in the Listed Summoned Stakes (1500m) at Sandown on November 15.
