Singapore mare Jolie's Shinju will be the first international horse to arrive for the spring carnival when she touches down in Melbourne on Saturday.

Trained by Hideyuki Takaoka, the five-year-old has an outstanding record and has won her last four starts including the Group One Singapore Derby (2000m) and Group One Patron's Bowl (1400m).

From 19 starts, Jolie's Shinju has amassed nine wins and six placings for prizemoney in excess of $1.27 million.

Jolie's Shinju will be prepared for the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 12 and has been nominated for the three major features of the carnival - the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

Her regular rider, expatriate Australian Ronnie Stewart, will gain experience around the tricky Moonee Valley circuit on Saturday with three rides including the Bernie Howlett-trained Macknuckle in the SAJ Cater Care Group Hcp (1519m).

Meanwhile, TAB Sportsbet has left overnight runner-up in the Ebor Handicap (2800m) at York in England, Changingoftheguard from the Aidan O'Brien stable, at $17 for the Melbourne Cup.

Dermot Weld's Profound Beauty, fifth in the Cup last year, remains the early $13 favourite ahead of 2008 third placegetter C'Est La Guerre at $15.

Changingoftheguard shares the third line of betting with last year's winner Viewed, 2007 winner Efficient, dual Derby winner Rebel Raider and AJC Australian Derby winner Roman Emperor.

Warringah, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, firmed from $41 to $31 for the Melbourne Cup following his fifth to Sesenta in the Ebor.

Takaoka said the plan was to give Jolie’s Shinju another gallop at Sandown on Saturday before taking her to Moonee Valley next Tuesday to familiarise herself with the tricky circuit.

“We will take her to Moonee Valley on Tuesday just to have a look at the track,” said Takaoka. “It will be a new place for her and the float trip will be added experience.

“She will then have her final gallop for her race on Saturday back out at Sandown on Wednesday morning.”

Plans are still undecided as to whether Jolie’s Shinju will have another start between the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and the Cox Plate, however a new race has been added to Jolie’s Shinju’s schedule following her Cox Plate attempt.

The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup over 2200m, restricted to Fillies and Mares at Kyoto, a right handed track, in Japan on November 15 is now on the cards.

“It is a race that that should suit her and there are no problems with quarantine,” said Takaoka.

The trainer will head back down to Melbourne next Monday to supervise the final stages of Jolie’s Shinju preparation for the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and will be joined by the mare’s regular rider Ronnie Stewart, who will fly down on Sunday night.

Stewart was recently in Melbourne and rode at the Moonee Valley meeting on August 22.

“The track has a lot of character about it,” said Stewart. “It was the first time I have ridden the track and it was very beneficial to have the experience.

“I’ve watched thousands of races on the television from Moonee Valley over the years and watched the Cox Plate since I was a 10 year-old, but it’s totally different riding there.”

Stewart said the undulations in the track shouldn’t bother Jolie’s Shinju and the tight turning track would suit her style of racing.

Moonee Valley is just 1805m in circumference with a straight of 173m. There is a downhill run from the 1600m start of the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes to the first turn around the 1200m mark and then the track rises 5.05m from the 800m to the winning post.

“If I have one worry it is that she may go a bit hard down the hill to the first turn, but she will pull her way up the rise without having to be pushed along.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Melbourne and getting on her in a race again.”

Further afield from the Cox Plate, Dr Tan is looking at Jolie’s Shinju heading to Japan to contest the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup, a race restricted to fillies and mare over 2200m on November 15.

Jolie’s Shinju has a companion with her in the quarantine complex at Sandown, one of trainer Len Treloar’s old racehorses Classic Secret, with the pair becoming almost inseparable.

“It hasn’t been cheap,” said Dr Tan of the excursion to Melbourne. “But we are here for the glory if not for the gold.

“If you do win then you get your money back.

“There are two important races for her. One is the Cox Plate, which has always been our aim, and the second one is the race in Japan.

“The Japanese connections are very keen to see her race there. I think that with it coming very soon after the Cox Plate, we think she can make it and we are sparing no expense.

“In fact if she goes for the trip to Japan then we will have to bring her mate with her. She is so attached to him now, that even when they don’t see each other they start pining for one another.”

Singapore Derby winner Jolie’s Shinju is set to continue her Melbourne campaign at Moonee Valley next week.

Following her pleasing third behind Whobegotyou and Mic Mac in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes over 1600m last Saturday, connections felt the mare needed another run before a tilt at her ultimate goal of the Group 1 A$3million Tatts Cox Plate over 2040m at Moonee Valley on October 24.

Jolie’s Shinju will line-up in the Listed A$101,000 JRA Cup, a quality handicap over 2040m on September 25. The other option for the mare was to run in the Group 1 A$353,000 Toorak Handicap over 1600m at Caulfield on October 10.

However Australian quarantine regulations would have meant Jolie’s Shinju moving from her present stabling at Sandown to a makeshift quarantine centre on the other side of the course had the Toorak Handicap been the preferred option.

European gallopers will arrive in Melbourne on September 26 for the Group 1 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, meaning Jolie’s Shinju will have to start her quarantine stint again if she remains in the same stable complex she is currently in, the preferred option of trainer Hideyuki Takaoka.

Hippocrates Stable managing owner Dr Tan Kai Chah said the decision to give Jolie’s Shinju another race before the Cox Plate was to have the mare at the peak of fitness for the race.

“We felt that it was best for Jolie’s Shinju to have another race before the Cox Plate,” said Dr Tan.

“We have decided to go for the JRA Cup. The other option was the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield, but we felt the JRA Cup was a better for her.

“It will give Jolie’s Shinju some more experience at Moonee Valley and it will also give her a look at the Cox Plate distance.”

Dr Tan said he was interested in the fact that Whobegotyou will be backing from his success in last week’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and will be lining-up in the Group 1 A$352,000 Underwood Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield on Saturday.

It was originally intended that Jolie’s Shinju would go straight into the Cox Plate without another race, but the six week break between races and the fact that the majority of the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes contestants will race again before the Cox Plate was an influencing factor.

“It looks like Whobegotyou could have another two starts before the Cox Plate,” said Dr Tan. “We felt that to aid Jolie’s Shinju’s fitness that she should have another start.

“She needs to go into the Cox Plate right at the top of her game. We were encouraged by her run in the Dato Tan Chin Nam and with another run in the JRA Cup it should bring her right to her top.”

Takaoka reported Jolie’s Shinju had pulled up well despite having a “good blow” after the race.

“We will increase her work slowly over the next few days and she will have a gallop at Sandown next Tuesday leading up to the JRA Cup,” said Takaoka.

Jockey Ronnie Stewart said on reflection that he took a lot of heart from Jolie’s Shinju third placing last week.

“She’s going to derive a lot of benefit both fitness wise and from the experience of racing at Moonee Valley,” said Stewart.

“She got to the turn at the 800m and wanted to quicken, just as she does here when she turns for home

“But there was no winning post and coming around the hometurn she got a bit lost. The other two horses went by her but she rallied again.

“She’s going to get a lot of benefit from the run and I’m looking forward to her next runs with some confidence.”

“She probably didn’t handle the soft going. She never ran over such a track back home,” was Takaoka’s first reaction.

“She pulled up okay. She didn’t take any knocks or anything like that.

“I will have to discuss with Dr Tan what is the next step now.”

Dr Tan, who like many fans of the Japanese-bred mare, had been encouraged by Jolie’s Shinju first sortie in the Dato Tan Chin Nam on September 12, when third to Whobegotyou and Mic Mac, was not throwing in the towel yet.

“Obviously it was very disappointing. She was vetted after the race and there was nothing wrong with her,” said Dr Tan.

“We all feel she is not fit enough. The last 400m found her out tonight.

“We will probably have to go to the Yalumba Stakes (at Caulfield over 2000m on October 10) as she needs one more run before the Cox Plate.

“She can’t go into the Cox Plate on that run and if she doesn’t run well in the Yalumba, we will have to re-assess our plans.

“We’re going to have to ramp up her trackwork to get her fitter before the Yalumba Stakes.”

“To me, she looked bigger today than what she was the other day (Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes),” said Stewart.

“Over the mile you can get away with it but the extra ground found her out.

“I don’t think she was handling the ground but at the same time, I didn’t let her off the bridle.

“The fellows down there have done a good job with her, but I think we now need to get a little tougher with her.”

Stewards in Melbourne ordered veterinary tests on Jolie’s Shinju after her poor showing in the Listed Tatts Group JRA Cup at Moonee Valley last Friday night.

The stipendary stewards questioned jockey Ronnie Stewart after the mare finished second last in the 2040m contest.

Stewart indicated that the Jolie’s Shinju may not have handled the slow track conditions and that the mare may have her work stepped up before she has her next start, due to be the Group 1 A$403,000 Yalumba Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield on October 10.

Tests on Jolie’s Shinju after the race revealed the mare was suffering a cardiac irregularity and further tests later revealed she was suffering from the thumps.

Stewards ruled that before Jolie’s Shinju can race again she must undergo an ECG test.

Trainer Hideyuki Takaoka (pictured) said he wasn’t concerned by the test results, although that helped explain her poor performance, and that Jolie’s Shinju would have her worked stepped up in a bid to get her fitness levels higher for the Group 1 A$3million Tatts Cox Plate over 2040m at Moonee Valley on October 24.

“The vets in Melbourne told me that a lot of horses can have these heart irregularities and go on to race quite soon,” said Takaoka.

“We just feel that Jolie’s Shinju needs to be fitter for her next race. I think she likes it down in Melbourne and that she’s been on holidays.

“We are going to give her some more work. Hopefully that will get her fitter and turn her form around.”

Jolie’s Shinju has now had two starts in Melbourne for a pleasing first-up third behind Whobegotyou in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley on September 12 before finishing more than 16 lengths from the winner Alcopop in last Friday’s JRA Cup.

The Cox Plate aspirations of Jolie’s Shinju are over after the Singapore Derby winner most recent electro-cardiograph (ECG) showed some irregularities.

Hippocrates managing owner Dr Tan Kai Chah  – following consultation with two veterinary surgeons and the university here in Singapore – made the heart wrenching decision to take the mare out of the Group 1 A$3million Tatts Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 24.

She has also been ruled out of contesting the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield on Saturday.

Jolie’s Shinju galloped at Caulfield on Tuesday morning – in what jockey Ronnie Stewart described as a “nice piece of work although she wasn’t handling the soft ground” – and an ECG afterwards cleared her to race on Saturday.

However on further inspection of the downloaded ECG information by Racing Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr Paul O’Callaghan, it showed Jolie’s Shinju was suffering from ventricular premature contractions which would require another ECG before she could race on Saturday.

Dr Tan requested further evaluation on the ECG and Singapore Turf Club’s head veterinary surgeon Dr Koos Van Den Berg agreed with the finding and suggested Jolie’s Shinju be given a two-to-three month spell.

Jolie’s Shinju had a mild fever before her last start at Moonee Valley, where she beat just one runner home in the Listed Tatts Group JRA Cup over 2040m at Moonee Valley on September 25.

Stewards reported after the race that Jolie’s Shinju was suffering from the thumps and heart irregularities and required an ECG before she could start again.

Following her Australian debut third behind Whobegotyou in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley on September 12, Jolie’s Shinju had got into $12 on the fifth line of betting for the Cox Plate but had subsequently drifted out to a quote of $41 before her withdrawal from the race.

Dr Tan said the viral complaint that Jolie’s Shinju was suffering can affect the heart and lungs – a condition known as myocarditis - and goes a long way to explain her disappointing Moonee Valley performance.

"I have had good advice that horses usually recover from this,” said Dr Tan. “There is enough evidence to say that it is dangerous to race her this Saturday and she needs another race before the Cox Plate.

So we are not going to take any chances with her. She will not be racing on Saturday and will not be running in the Cox Plate.

“She can have a spell of between two and three months and hopefully that will get her over the problem and she can come back to racing.

“You must remember she is still a young horse. Being a Japanese-bred mare, she doesn’t turn five until January.”

Dr Tan said plans were still being sorted as to where Jolie’s Shinju would spell.

“We are waiting on information from AQIS (Australian Quarantine Inspection Service) as to what options we have for spelling her in Australia,” said Dr Tan.

“They have to give us permission as to where Jolie’s Shinju can go. Even though she has cleared quarantine for racing, there are different rules if we want her to mix with young horses and broodmares.

"She still needs another three swabs before any decision can made be as to what will happen with her in the immediate future.”

If Jolie’s Shinju gets the green light to stay in Australia to recuperate, Dr Tan said the mare would have another ECG before plans are finalised on whether to bring her back to Singapore.

He said the International Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup over 2000m next May was at the top of his list.

“Ideally we would like to bring her back for the SIA Cup and to go from there,” said Dr Tan. “I have already spoken to Leigh Jordon at Racing Victoria and said if she is going well then we would like to go back for another shot at the Cox Plate next year.

“But if after two or three months off she is still showing signs that she has a heart problem, then her career could be over and we will retire her to become a broodmare in Australia.”

The Jolie’s Shinju camp is still anxiously awaiting a clearance from Racing Victoria despite getting the “all-clear” from Werribee Veterinary Clinic’s equine heart specialist Dr Kate Savage.

The Singapore mare’s snuffed-out Cox Plate dreams were rekindled on Monday after she defied the initial findings of an irregular heart condition (premature ventricular contractions), which would have required a 2-3 months’ spell, by passing a treadmill test at the world-renowned Australian clinic.

The Hippocrates Stable-owned galloper is entered in this Saturday’s Group 2 $180,000 Tristarc Stakes over 1400m and the Group 3 $125,000 David Jones Cup over 2000m at Caulfield but may still not get past her barn door unless Racing Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr Paul O’Callaghan deems her fit to race.

“She hasn’t been cleared yet, even if the latest blood test has come back 100 per cent clear and within the normal limit,” said Hippocrates Stable adviser Len Treloar.

“At this stage, I was told she will need to go through another gallop on Thursday morning, while connected to an ECG (electro cardiograph), which I feel would not be indicative.

“She’s already been submitted to a very extensive treadmill gallop which she came through perfectly. Dr Savage, one of the world’s leading equine cardiologists didn’t have any issue with her.

“I don’t know what more do they want. However, if they want another ECG, we are more than willing to do it.”

Treloar, who returns to Melbourne tomorrow morning to monitor the situation closely, said that the choice of rider takes a back seat at this juncture.

“Our priority is for her to get the clearance from the vets at Racing Victoria. It wouldn’t be fair looking for a jockey when she is not even a confirmed starter,” said Treloar.

“If she gets the go-ahead, it’s more likely she will run in the Tristarc, which is a race for mares over 1400m.”

Jolie’s Shinju has been given the all-clear to run at Caulfield on Saturday after undergoing a veterinary examination on Thursday morning.

Attached to a remote ECG monitor, Jolie’s Shinju galloped in front of Racing Victoria’s head veterinary surgeon Dr Paul O’Callaghan, veterinary surgeon Dr Paul Kavanagh and two Racing Victoria stewards, including chairman Terry Bailey.

Jolie’s Shinju needed to pass the test in order to line-up in the Group 2 A$180,000 Harrold’s Stakes over 1400m on Saturday in which she has drawn barrier three in the 13 horse field.

Hippocrates Stable principle owner Dr Tan Kai Chah reported that Jolie’s Shinju galloped very well in front of the veterinary panel.

“She galloped well and everything has come back well from the test,” said Dr Tan. “She will go onto race over 1400m on Saturday and then hopefully back-up into the Cox Plate next week.”

The Singapore Derby winner has been in Melbourne preparing for the Group 1 $3million Tatts Cox Plate over 2040m at Moonee Valley on October 24.

Dr Tan also announced that Len Treloar will take over as the trainer of Jolie’s Shinju for Saturday’s race.

The mare had won the “Triple Crown” under Japanese handler Hideyuki Takaoka who was in charge of the mare for her two runs down in Melbourne last month.

“Takaoka just could not give the commitment to be down in Melbourne leading up to Saturday’s race,” said Dr Tan.

“He has done a terrific job with the filly. Winning the Singapore Derby and in the process the Triple Crown was a fantastic achievement.

“Len Treloar has been a great support through this trying time and I have asked him to take over the training of Jolie’s Shinju.”

Vlad Duric, who is heading down to Melbourne following Friday night’s meeting here in Singapore to ride Master O’Reilly in the Group 1 A$2.5million Caulfield Cup over 2400m, has been booked to ride Jolie’s Shinju on Saturday.

Singapore Derby winner Jolie’s Shinju finished out of the money at Caulfield on Saturday but didn’t disappoint connections with the effort.

Jolie’s Shinju, ridden by Vlad Duric, finished eighth, beaten 6.2 lengths in the Group 2 Harrolds Stakes over 1400m behind the Caulfield-trained mare Typhoon Tracy, ridden by Luke Nolen, which scored a two-and-three-quarter length victory.

Duric had Jolie’s Shinju in her customary role in front as pacemaker over Typhoon Tracy as the field settled down. Coming to the hometurn Jolie’s Shinju still appeared to be travelling comfortably, but on straightening she was quickly headed by the winner and wilted in the run home.

Len Treloar, who took over the training of Jolie’s Shinju from Hideyuki Takaoka this week, was happy enough with her performance but has already ruled out running the mare in next week’s Group 1 A$3million Tatts Cox Plate over 2040m at Moonee Valley.

“We were happy enough with her performance,” said Treloar. “It is just she is lacking stamina at this stage.

“She hasn’t had the miles in her legs this preparation that she had leading up to her win in the Derby and she did have a good blow after today’s race.

“Otherwise she has pulled-up quite well, but we will make some minor training adjustments from now on.

“We have already ruled out the Cox Plate next week and instead we will aim for one of the mare’s races during Melbourne Cup week.

“She hasn’t had the ideal preparation for the Cox Plate, but I think with some alterations to her training we should be able to get her back to her best form.”

Melbourne Cup week commences on Saturday October 31 with four days of racing on the following Tuesday, Thursday and finishing on Saturday November 7.

Duric said Jolie’s Shinju travelled well until the hometurn where she struck some chopped up ground turning for home.

“She did not handle the choppy ground on the corner, but in my personal opinion she is racing below her best,” said Duric.

Treloar said Jolie’s Shinju had pulled up well from her last run in the Harrolds Stakes and just came through a gallop to keep her ticking over.

“She’s doing fantastic and just had a gallop today. The reports on her are all good.

“She will now work at Flemington to familiarise herself with the track,” said Treloar.

“Her next target is the Myer Classic on Derby day on 31st October.”

The Group 1 Myer Classic is a 1600m race at Flemington for fillies and mares and will probably see Jolie’s Shinju renew rivalry with her Harrolds Stakes victor Typhoon Tracy.

Singapore Derby winner Jolie’s Shinju has been sent for a spell following her disappointing effort in Melbourne last Saturday.

After leading, Jolie’s Shinju was eased down in the straight to finish at the tail of the field in the Group 1 Myer Classic over 1600m at Flemington.

The mare’s new trainer Len Treloar said Jolie’s Shinju would have almost two months in the paddock in Australia before returning to Singapore.

“Jolie’s Shinju was ‘over the top’ by the time she raced last Saturday,” said Treloar.

“She had a pretty taxing time down in Melbourne and it all eventually caught up with her. There are no injury problems with her and she pulled-up fine.

“She can go and have a good break now and we’ll get her home to Singapore and prepare her for a shot at the SIA Cup.”

Next year’s Group 1 $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup, over 2000m, will be run on May 16.

After a good third placing at her Australian debut in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 12, Jolie’s Shinju then finished down the track at her three subsequent starts.

Treloar said the Melbourne Spring Carnival had whetted owner Dr Tan Kai Chah’s appetite and he hopes to again head to back to Melbourne next year with the mare.
