A tilt at the Doncaster Mile at Randwick is on the cards for star sprinter-miler Mufhasa after his dominant victory in the Group One Waikato Sprint at Te Rapa in Hamilton.

Mufhasa sat outside the leader Ruud Van Slaats soon after jumping and had too many guns in the straight to win easily by 1-1/4 lengths in the 1400m feature.

It was the fifth win in his last six starts for Mufhasa and his second consecutive Group One, having won the $1 million Telegraph Handicap (1200m) in similar circumstances on January 17.

Stephen McKee, who trains Mufhasa at Ardmore near Auckland, knows what it takes to win the $A2 million Doncaster (1600m) on April 18, having won it twice with champion mare Sunline.

"You don't just go over and expect to win big races in Australia and he hasn't done it over there yet," McKee said.

"But he travels well and races better right-handed so we have to think about it."

Mufhasa's trip could well depend on what weight the handicappers give him for the rich handicap.

Should Mufhasa be aimed at the Doncaster he could well run in the George Ryder Stakes as a lead-up.

Mufhasa's victory took his record to 11 wins and three placings from 21 starts for earnings in excess of $NZ1.13 million.

Gaze ran home strongly from the rear of the field to pip Ruud Van Slaats by a neck for second.

Resuming stayers Red Ruler and Nom Du Jeu couldn't keep up with the sprinters, running 11th and last respectively in the 15-horse field.
