LATE DOUBT FOR ELECTROCUTIONIST

Electrocutionist could bypass Saturday afternoon's King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes after suffering a last-minute injury scare.

The five-year-old was reported to be stiff on Saturday morning but Godolphin have sent the horse to Ascot and hope he will be ready to take part in the Group One feature at 4.20pm.

"We don't want to set any unnecessary alarm bells ringing but the horse did pull out stiff this morning," Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford told Channel 4's Morning Line.

"We think he probably got cast in his box overnight but he's not lame and is on his way to Ascot.

"Touch wood, all being well, he will be able to run."

Crisford expects the horse to arrive at the track before 9am but stressed a decision on Electrocutionist's participation is unlikely to made until this afternoon.

"He was stiff but he seemed to walk out of it quite quickly which is encouraging," added Crisford.

"We will check him out at Ascot thoroughly and we are hopeful he will be able to take his chance.

"The time scale is that we saw him at five o'clock this morning and he will probably be there (Ascot) at about a quarter to nine.

"We will look after 2pm as we want him to rest and settle into his box at Ascot.

"We would expect a decision between 2.30 and 3pm."

Electrocutionist, winner of the Dubai World Cup, is the general second favourite behind French raider Hurricane Run in the Ascot showpiece.

ANDRE FABRE departs from what is the accepted norm fortop-class French-trained horses to bring world champion Hurricane Run to Britain for the first time today.

France's champion trainer has never won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, and Hurricane Run's assault on the prestigious prize will mark Fabre's first attempt on the race in 11 years.

The switch to a summer campaign with a colt who did not race during July and August last year when he captured the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is Fabre's only "little worry".

Yet it is a necessary departure if the colt is to confirm his status in world racing, as Montjeu, like Hurricane Run owned by Michael Tabor, proved when triumphing in 2000 and becoming France's first King George winner for many years.

Hurricane Run took the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in May in effortless style, but suffered a shock reverse at the hands of the mare Pride in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud last month, when Kieren Fallon said the horse felt "flat" and Fabre blamed the distraction of the treesfor contributing to the defeat.

Lack of recent competition was also a factor, he said, as he promised Ascot racegoers would see Hurricane Run "as good as he is" when Christophe Soumillon returns to his back, in place of the absent Fallon.  Any additional concern about the ground eased when 12mm fell on Thursday night to change the going to good, conditions which Fabre said "will be good for everybody".

"My little worry is that this will be the first time he has run in the summer," he said.

"It's quite unusual for me to run a horse like Hurricane Run at this time of the year, but I made his programme this year around the King George, so if he's beaten I can only blame myself.

"The King George is one of the biggest races in the world and he has already won the Arc, so I wanted to run him at Ascot. But he is proven on soft and heavy, so I would prefer some rain before the race."

Asked if Hurricane Run was now back to his Arc-winning form, Fabre added: "I guess so, but this is a different race with different competition, and he also has to travel, which he did not have to do before the Arc.

�The horse is fine and I'm pleased with him. He's ready for the race."

For Soumillon today marks a chance to score a first win at Ascot. In 20 rides including five at Group 1 level he has only ever had one runner-up, never mind a winner.
