Boss,a three-time Melbourne Cup winner, told the Hong Kong Jockey Clubyesterday he wanted a release from a lucrative club riding contract forthe new season.
He has cited family reasons and his passion for carnival racing inAustralia as the main reasons he wants to return. HKJC officials haveagreed to the jockey's request.
Boss decided to return home after being promised the support of some of Sydney's leading trainers.
The Sydney riding ranks are now arguably the strongest they have been in decades.
Boss's return comes just days after international superstar KerrinMcEvoy revealed he has given up his coveted role as No. 2 rider for theGodolphin stable in Europe to become the stable rider for WarwickFarm-based Peter Snowden and the Darley Stud racing operation.
Boss said the challenge of re-establishing himself in Sydney racing has fuelled his competitive streak.
"The landscape of racing in Sydney has changed so much in 12 months," Boss said.
"There are so many good jockeys in Sydney which will make for tough, competitive riding."
Boss said his young family enjoyed Hong Kong but missed the Sydney lifestyle.
After speaking with some leading trainers and owners in recent days, Boss made the decision not to continue riding in Hong Kong.
"I've got the support of three big stables and I'm really looking forward to returning to Sydney racing," he said.
"You don't realise how much you miss home and the racing here until you spend a period of time away."
Boss had a solid debut season in Hong Kong but found he missed the big-race action back home more than he ever imagined.
"But when I came back to Sydney for the Golden Slipper and DoncasterHandicap last autumn, I felt that surge of adrenalin, that buzz you getwhen riding in those big races," he said.
"I won the Slipper (Seb- ring) and Doncaster (Triple Honour) but Ihad that feeling of real excitement in the days leading up to thoseraces, too.
"
I've got to say that I never got that buzz about racing when I was in Hong Kong."
Among Boss's likely spring carnival rides is Doncaster Handicap heroTriple Honour, who is due to have a barrier trial at Warwick Farm onFriday.
Boss rode 34 winners in Hong Kong last season to finish 11th on thejockeys premiership, his mounts earning nearly $4 million prizemoney.
Former leading Sydney jockeys Darren Beadman and Zac Purton will continue riding in Hong Kong next season.
Boss is due to return to Hong Kong on Friday when he will officiallyhand in his riding licence and pack up his belongings before returningto Sydney.
He is hopeful of making a return to the saddle at Rosehill on August 9 but will definitely be riding at Canterbury on August 13.
Boss has taken on new jockeys manager Tony Crisafi, who also manages improving Sydney jockey Tim Clark.
