UZB/QAT - Qatar lose game by default to Uzbekistan
WUHAN, China (26th FIBA Asia Championship): GCC champions Qatar lost their opening Group B game against Middle Asia qualifier Uzbekistan by default on Thursday.
Qatar started the game with only seven players on their roster – practically only six with the injured Ali Turki not officially removed from the roster. All five of their starters for the game committed five personal fouls in the first six minutes of the game, thus leaving them with fewer than two players, which led to a ‘game lost by default’.
According to Art 21 of Official Basketball Rules 2010, “a team shall lose a game by default if, during the game, the team has fewer than two (2) players on the playing court ready to play.
Further, Art 21.2.1 states that “If the team to which the game is awarded is ahead, the score shall stand as at the time when the game was stopped. If the team to which the game is awarded is not ahead, the score shall be recorded as two to zero (2 to 0) in its favour. The defaulting team shall receive one (1) point in the classification.”
Uzbekistan thus won the game 27-12 but Qatar will keep their one point from the defeat.
