Millard, a native of South Africa, was a multiple champion trainer in that country, and handled the likes of Empress Club (SAf), Jet Master and Surfing Home. He trained in South Africa for nine years, saddling 39 Grade 1 winners, before relocating to Hong Kong.

終於退落黎, 向前馬王致敬

不過, 其實我覺得雄心威龍同早前退役的精彩日子其實還有不俗的戰鬥力

另外, 兩隻同時期的好馬天久同加州萬里, 感覺呢兩隻的退步程度仲大過雄心威龍同精彩日子

反而呢兩隻都仲未退

Millard’s son Tony took over from him in 1991, while son-in-law Geoff Woodruff also became a trainer around that time.

Both men continued the tradition with aplomb. Tony won two national trainers’ championships before moving to Hong Kong, with notable success. Geoff has been South African champion five times.

It takes prompting to get Millard to name the best he trained. “All of them would have been champions in any era; exported to Dubai and so on. But perhaps the best was Empress Club.”

He handled the Argentine-bred filly for just a year before Tony took her over and she became known as “The Galloping Goldmine”.

“She was superb; had everything,” says Millard. “She could do speed work, but could also relax anywhere in a race and run on. She won over 1000m; two weeks later won over a mile and a quarter (2000m). It was like having a machine.”

Empress Club went to the USA but never performed as she had for the Millards.

Their success with Argentine-bred horses started a trend of South American imports that continues to this day.




Empress Club一生20戰15勝2位，共勝出9場南非一級賽，職業生涯後期運去美國出賽，贏出三級賽Hillsborough Handicap，跑一級賽Beverly Hills Handicap及Gamely Stakes落第。
