The Kings have acquired center Hilton Armstrong from the Hornets.
The Hornets, who are attempting to clear salary from their payroll, will also send cash to Sacramento.
For New Orleans, the trade sheds the $2.8 million salary of Armstrong and leaves the team a bit more than $500,000 over this season's luxury-tax threshold.
The Kings will send the Hornets a future, conditional second-round pick.
