Only an hour after all parties signed on the dotted line to secure Starspangledbanner's future at Coolmore, the big chestnut stepped out onto the Flemington track to compete in the G1 Coolmore Lightning Stks.
Racing in the Michael Tabor colours, the hype surrounding the horse was phenomenal and he was sent out favourite in the slick field. When the gates opened he was beaten for speed a touch so Danny elected to race with a sit. He looked to have resented that and was over racing in the mid stages. When he was pulled into daylight to make his run he looked as though he would finish over the top of the leaders but was swamped late.
After the race, Danny reported that his condition gave out and that it was a super first up effort considering. He will be much improved by that hitout and should be very hard to beat back on his favourite track Caulfield for the Oakleigh Plate.
It was a very emotional day for all of his connections, many of whom have had their lives changed by this star colt after the $9.75mil deal went through earlier in the day.
He will have 2 more runs for us before heading to the UK to race for Coolmore under the care of Aidan O'Brien after which he will began his next career at stud.
