Trainer David Hayes boosted the powerful hand is set to play in this year's $3.5 million AAMI Golden Slipper Stakes when classy colt All American laid to rest queries about the merit of Melbourne two-year-old form with an impressive Sydney debut at Randwick today.
All American is one of four top notch youngsters Hayes is set to start in the Golden Slipper at Rosehill on April 19, a race he won for the first time in 2006 with Miss Finland.
Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reann, VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner Von Costa De Hero and the filly Hips Don't Lie will make up the Hayes team in the Slipper if all goes to plan in the next two weeks.
Reann and Hips Don't Lie will have their first Sydney starts at Canterbury next Saturday while Von Costa De Hero will not race again before the Slipper.
With David Hayes in Dubai to saddle Niconero at tonight's World Cup meeting at Nad Al Sheba, stable spokesman Tony McEvoy said it was pleasing to see All American produce a quality performance at his first Sydney start.
"It took him a few days to settle in and take to the Sydney way of going but he handled it well today even though he played up a bit in the yard before the race," McEvoy said.
"He looks a great chance in the Slipper because he is the type who can sit off the speed and find the line.
"If the race was being run at home there would be nothing between him and Von Costa De Hero but Reann is a professional and saves his best for race day."
McEvoy confirmed that today's wining jockey Brad Rawiller will retain the Slipper ride on All American while Craig Williams is locked in for Von Costa de Hero and Dwayne Dunn will ride Reann.
"We need a rider for Hips Don't Lie but David may already have that covered," McEvoy said.
Rawiller rode a confident race on All American, allowing the Red Ransom colt to sit back off the speed before starting his run on the apex of the home turn.
He kept All American under a strong hold and well balanced until well into the straight when the colt let down strongly to pick up the leaders wide on the track, getting the better of the gallant Over The Wicket to score by a head.
Rawiller said he had something in reserve on All American and expects the colt to improve considerably with the benefit of his first Sydney race experience.
All American went into the Blue Diamond at Caulfield last month unbeaten after winning his first two starts and filled the quinella for the Hayes stable in the Group One race when he finished second to Reann.
The Blue Diamond form had been questioned but All American proved today that the race will hold up as a reliable guide to the Golden Slipper.
Over The Wicket's trainer Gary Portelli will anxioiusly watch the final lead-up races to the Slipper over the next two Saturdays for fear that those results will force his youngster out of the big race.
"He's in at the moment but things could change if a new qualifiers come through the remaining races," Portelli said.
""It's a balancing act with him at the moment as he has been up for a long time and I don't realy want to have to run him again before the Slipper as he shpowed today he likes to be fresh.
"I think he's the best chance I have had for the Slipper because he he can hold a position and will give plenty at the finish."
Dubai To Sydney also remains on the borderline for a Slipper start after finishing an unlucky third after a failing to get a clear crack at a vital stage in the straight.
