One of the leading AJC Oaks contenders Arapaho Miss has been ruled out of the autumn carnival after injuring a knee.
Arapaho Miss , prepared by Victorian Pat Carey, has been on top of Oaks betting markets since winning last year's Crown Oaks at Flemington.
After two runs in Melbourne, the latest a solid fourth behind subsequent Group 1 winner Zarita in the Kewney Stakes, she headed to Sydney to prepare for the
AJC Oaks and made her debut there against the colts and geldings in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.
The filly ran well below par, though, finishing 16th behind Weekend Hussler.
After noticing inflammation to her near fore knee, Carey sent the filly to the Randwick Equine Centre for x-rays.
She was found to have a bone chip on the knee which will require surgery and put her out for up to six months.
Carey was obviously bitterly disappointed but said it was the reality of his profession.
The daughter of Danehill Dancer was the third favourite for the
AJC Oaks – at Randwick on Wednesday April 30 - at $6.00 behind Schweppes Oaks winner Zarita ($4.00) and Keith Nolen Classic winner Bernicia ($5.00)
