Golden Jubilee Stakes placegetter War Artist is under consideration for a trip to Melbourne for the spring carnival.

Connections of the Australian-bred sprinter War Artist are looking at a Melbourne trip following the gelding's second placing in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot last Saturday as he is now in the mix for the Global Sprint Challenge title.

By running second in the Golden Jubilee, War Artist has earned five points to be only five points off the three joint leaders on the Global Sprint Challenge pointscore table.

After three legs of the GSC Australia's Lightning Stakes winner Apache Cat shares the lead on 10 points with Equiano and Kingsgate Native, winners if the King's Stand Stakes and Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Takeover Target is next on eight points with War Artist and Swick on five points.

War Artist's trainer James Eustace said he would be interested in an Australian trip if War Artist picks up more GSC points in the July Cup at Newmarket next month where he is expected to have a return bout with Golden Jubilee winner Kingsgate Native.

This will be the first year the July Cup has counted as a leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, a series of top grade turf sprints run in Australia, England, Hong Kong and Japan.

Japan hosts two legs of the GSC in September. The series then returns to Australia for the Age Classic at Flemington in November before its finale in the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin in December.

“We can go on to the July Cup and then might have a crack at the Global Sprint Challenge,” Eustace said.

“He's the right sort of horse to travel, he's a five-year-old gelding and takes everything in his stride.

“His connections are fairly international as well.”

The son of shuttle sire Orpen was bred in Australia and began his racing career in South Africa before he was sent to the UK.

War Artist has started just 10 times for four wins and five placings.
