Just like last year, Devil Moon will back up at Moonee Valley this weekend in the Group 2 Cranes Stakes.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained mare scored her first win of last year's spring in the Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington, before backing up a week later to win the Group 2 race at Moonee Valley over a mile for mares.

Devil Moon then made it three on end with an upset win in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over 2000m at Flemington before running fifth in the Cox Plate and fourth in the MacKinnon Stakes.

Kavanagh is following a similar path with the mare this year, where she has finished third in the Cockram Stakes fresh before her latest effort in last weekend's Let's Elope Stakes, carrying a couple of kilos more and finishing third behind the fast finishing Mimi Lebrock.

The trainer was happy with her effort as he believes she is more dour this time in and will continue on the same path as last year to the Turnbull, but will then target the Caulfield Cup and perhaps Melbourne Cup.

It will be an important weekend for the Kavanagh team not only with Devil Moon but stable star Maldivian , who lines up in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

The talented galloper has run two top races this time in, placing in both the Liston and Memsie Stakes behind Light Fantastic and Weekend Hussler respectively.

He is expected to be further improved over the mile in this weekend's weight-for-age feature and, like Weekend Hussler, could tackle all three spring majors.

Kavanagh said following Saturday's race he is likely to back Maldivian up in the Underwood Stakes before deciding between the Turnbull or Yalumba as a lead-up to the Cups or Cox Plate, or all three.
