覺士盾消息 : 「馬爾代夫」將作連鬥

Flemington trainer Mark Kavanagh will have a runner in this year's Tattersall's Cox Plate (2040m) but it won't be exciting galloper Whobegotyou.

Kavanagh will stick to three-year-old racing with the Caulfield Guineas winner, who is set to run at Moonee Valley on Saturday over the Cox Plate journey but in the Group 2 AAMI Vase on his way to the Victoria Derby.

To run in the Plate connections would have to fork out a $130,000 late entry fee.

In the $3 million feature Group 1, though, Kavanagh will back up Maldivian after his ninth in last Saturday's Caulfield Cup behind international stayer All The Good.

Maldivian worked across from his wide gate early to lead the field in the Caulfield Cup, before drifting back to fifth.

Maldivian was in the firing line in the straight before weakening late to finish five lengths from the winner.

Kavanagh said he was happy with the run but felt he didn't run the 2400m journey.

“He was still there at the 150m and just didn't run out the distance but apart from that I was happy,” Kavanagh told The Advertiser.

“The gear changes (tongue tie and crossover noseband) worked.”

Kavanagh said dropping back to his favourite trip, about 2000m, would be ideal for the gelding now he is at peak fitness.

Cox Plate markets are dominated by the girls, with Kiwi mare Princess Coup the $3.50 favourite with Sportingbet just ahead of Sydney filly Samantha Miss at $3.70.

Zipping is at $8.00 while Alamosa is a $10.00 chance.

Maldivian is at $16.00
