NSW jockeys have been granted a significant increase in race and barrier trial riding fees.

The increases, backdated to February 1, has increased the riding fees in NSW races by 14% to $150 per ride.

This represents the largest increase in jockey ride fees in more than 10 years following the inquiry into the work value of jockeys.

Barrier trial fees will also rise in line with the race fee.

The increases represent more than $1.1million in additional income to NSW jockeys who have also benefitted from a $500,000 increase in prizemoney percentages on increases that commenced last year.

Racing NSW says NSW jockeys now earn almost $14.4 million from race rides, barrier trials and prizemoney annually, an amount that collectively exceeds the arnings of jockys in other states.

NSWJA chief executive Paul Innes welcomed the increased fees.

“This increase in ride fees enables the incomes of jockeys in NSW to maintain pace with cost increases and recognises their skills and the risks undertaken," Innes said.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys aid the increase ensures that jockeys are recognised for their contribution to the racing industry and will help to maintain riding talent in NSW.

He said the increase highlights the need for the racing industry to maintain and build its revenue streams from sources such as race fields fees.

The additional $1.1million for jockeys' expenses is met by race clubs and underlines the importance of the NSW racing industry continuing to grow revenue to ensure it can meet the demands of participant groups,” V'landys said.

Negotiations are continuing with the NSWJA over other issues related to jockey welfare programs such as re-education and special financial assistance for injured riders.
