Jockeys John Powell, Mark Gallagher and Danny Beasley have each been granted a one-year extension to their Singapore Turf Club licence, while French jockey Olivier Doleuze will be the new addition to the Kranji riding ranks for six weeks.
The new visiting jockey’s licence for Powell will run from 1 August 2009 until 31 July 2010, while Gallagher saw his permit renewed for the period from 1 September 2009 through 31 August 2010.
Beasley’s current licence was due to expire on 31 December 2009, but on application for an early extension, the Sydney rider was given the nod for another 12 months from 1 January to 31 December 2010.
The popular Hong Kong-based Doleuze, who is no stranger to Kranji racegoers, will profit from the break in the former British colony to ride in Singapore from 30 July to 11 September 2009.
Well-liked by Kranji racegoers for his flamboyance, Doleuze, 37, rode in Singapore and Malaysia on several occasions between 1996 and 2003, but is probably better remembered for his prolific stint at Kranji in 2000 when he registered 23 wins from 106 rides.
The son of former jockey-turned trainer Georges Doleuze formed a fruitful partnership with trainer Mick Kent for whom he bagged the 1998 Lion City Cup aboard The Jolly Roger at Bukit Timah. But his biggest claim to fame in Singapore came in 2001 when he won the inaugural KrisFlyer Sprint aboard Iron Mask for top French trainer Criquette Head-Maarek.
A former champion apprentice in France and career winner of over 1,300 races, Doleuze won most of his feature races for Head-Maarek, including the French 2000 Guineas on Green Tune in 1994, and the Prix de Diane in 2000 aboard Egyptband.
Doleuze relocated to Hong Kong in 2001/02, and has brought up a total win-tally of 288 wins over eight consecutive seasons, with his best haul coming in 2006/7 with 67 winners.
His main achievements in Hong Kong include two wins in the Group 1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile aboard The Duke (2006) and Good Ba Ba (2007), with whom he also won the Group 1 Champions Mile, Stewards’ Cup and Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup last year.
Doleuze goes to scale at 54kg.
Powell, 39, is a regular face on the Singapore circuit, having visited on numerous stints since 1997. A winner of over 1,400 races, Powell, who goes to scale at 53kg, earned his highest accolades at Kranji in 2005 when he took out the Group 1 Singapore Derby with Hello And Goodbye.
This year, the Australian jockey added the prestigious Group 2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup to his resume when he partnered Restored to an upset victory in the 2000m event. Powell currently sits third on the Singapore jockey’s premiership with 37 wins and 62 placings from 267 rides.
Gallagher, 40, has plied his trade in Ireland, England, France, America, Macau, Malaysia, India before setting up base in Singapore in the last three years. One of the highlights of his career was winning the champion jockey title in Bangalore (Winter) in 1995-1996 and 1996-1997 with 44 and 41 wins respectively during a seven-year stint in India.
The Irishman has more than 900 wins to his name, and though the winner of 37 Classic and Grade races is yet to capture a Group race in Singapore, he did win the inaugural edition of the filly and mare race at Kranji, the Ladies Purse with Jolie’s Shinju last year.
Gallagher, who goes to scale at 51.5kgs, sits 9th in this year’s jockey’s premiership with 21 wins and 23 placings from 153 rides, a commendable performance considering he does not really ride for the leading stables.
Beasley, 34, has been a regular visitor to the winner’s circle this year, notching 33 wins, including two Group 3 wins, the Chairman’s Trophy with Any Humour and the 1st Leg of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge with Mooring. Beasley has finished in the placings 73 times this season.
The Australian, who goes to scale at 53kg, is a winner of about 1,200 races, mainly for leading trainers Gai Waterhouse and Guy Walter, including 14 Group 1’s such as the Golden Slipper (Polar Success) and Doncaster Handicap and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, both with Grand Armee.
