Inquiry into a sample irregularity - Jockey K L Chui

In accordance with usual practice, at the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday 13 May 2009, a random draw was conducted to establish which riders would be required to provide urine samples for testing regarding the presence of prohibited substances. This draw was conducted by Jockey O Doleuze in the presence of Stipendiary Steward P Dingwall, the duty nurse and the duty Security staff.
One of the riders drawn out to provide a sample was Jockey K L Chui. The Club's Head of Racing Laboratory, Dr T S M Wan, has today advised the Stewards that the urine sample supplied by Jockey Chui has shown the presence of a prohibited substance. Jockey Chui was advised of the analyst's finding and has requested the reserve portion of the sample be tested by an independent laboratory. At this time of making this release, the independent laboratory to conduct the further analytical work had not yet been selected.
The Racing Stewards have decided it would be inappropriate for them to publicly announce the analyst's finding at this time. A further statement will be made when the independent analyst's report is received.
The Racing Stewards have exercised the powers they have under Rule 60(3) and have decided to stand Jockey Chui down from riding with immediate effect until an inquiry into the analyst's report has been determined.
As Jockey Chui has been stood down from riding, he will not be able to fulfil his declared riding engagements at the Happy Valley racemeeting to be held on Thursday 21 May 2009. As such, the Stewards have approved the following riding substitutions:-
Race 1: D Beadman on TOUCH MORE
Race 2: M Du Plessis on ACTUARIAL TALENT
Race 3: C K Tong on BOLD CHAMPION
Race 4: D Beadman on MARVELLOUS
Race 6: J Winks on ANKH MORPORK
Race 7: Z Purton on HANDSOME TARGET
Race 8: J Winks on HIGH POINT
The matter is now adjourned to a date to be fixed.
